Summary

For more than a year, Gabe Callan has known Riley Irving is his mate, but Riley isn't ready. He stumbled into Gabe's bakery one night after having left his abusive ex, and he's still dealing with what he's been through. Gabe knows he needs time, but he doesn't know how much longer he can wait.

All Riley wants is a safe, slow, boring life. He doesn't want any adventures other than those he reads about in romance novels. But maybe he's read too many paranormal books because he's imagining the guys at the bakery growling, and sometimes he believes he sees their eyes shift color. Maybe he's going insane.

Gabe is scared to tell Riley the truth about what he is. If he waits too long, Riley will feel betrayed. If he tells him too soon, he will run away, and Gabe isn't sure he can survive without Riley. How do you tell your skittish human mate you're a bear shifter?

Comprised of four heroic crowns of sonnets, Alicia Mountain’s Four in Hand is both formal and experimental, ranging from lyric romantic and familial narratives to blank verses of reconfigured found text pulled from financial newsletter emails. Language and white space equally captivate with their sparsity and abundance as Mountain pursues the implications of national political identity with intersectional awareness. These poems interrogate our collective complicity in late-stage capitalism, drone warfare, the election of Donald Trump, environmental degradation, mental health crises, and the dawn of Covid-19 through the lens of gay poetic lineage, regionalism, and familial kinships structures. With one enthralling image after the other, Four in Hand builds a world that carves out necessary space for lesbian gaze, speakership, and personhood. From the back corner of a vast, sprawling, yet gorgeous landscape of thought, Mountain's poems beckon us inside.

Colonel Reed Raven is a field operative with the North American Joint Combat Force, one of the few outposts of civilization remaining in the fragmented world of 2180. When they discover the superstitious townsfolk of Rome have unearthed a highly dangerous doomsday weapon from the previous century and are now worshiping it as a pagan idol, Raven is sent on an urgent mission to disarm it.

To hide his ignorance of local customs, Raven goes in the guise of a rough barbarian from the even less civilized lands of northern Europe, a role his super-powerful physique makes him ideal for. But the mission won't be an easy one, and he's lucky to encounter a handsome young priest named Taliaris who has valuable knowledge -- not to mention psychic skills -- that Raven lacks. Together, Raven and Taliaris set out to save the world ... and fall in love with each other into the bargain.
