Sinopse

In "Verses and Sonnets," Hilaire Belloc employs a rich tapestry of lyrical poetry to explore themes of love, faith, and human folly. This collection showcases Belloc's mastery of traditional forms, particularly the sonnet, while also revealing his propensity for playful irony and profound philosophical reflection. The poems are marked by their musicality and vivid imagery, frequently drawing from both personal experiences and broader historical contexts. The work stands as a vivid testament to the literary revival of the early 20th century, aligning with contemporaries who sought to reinvigorate English verse amidst a rapidly changing social landscape. Hilaire Belloc, a prolific writer and influential figure in Edwardian literature, was not only a poet but also a historian and political commentator. Born in France and later settling in England, Belloc's diverse cultural background infused his work with a unique perspective on modernity, tradition, and the interplay between the two. His staunch Catholic faith and deep appreciation for the pastoral beauty of rural life permeate this collection, offering both solace and challenge to the reader. "Verses and Sonnets" is a compelling read for anyone interested in eloquent poetry that marries form with rich thematic exploration. Belloc's verses invite readers into a world where the sacred and the profane coexist, making it essential for scholars, poets, and general readers alike who seek to understand the depths of human experience through the lens of exquisite language.

Ovid's Metamorphoses is an epic poem written in Latin, composed of fifteen books, which explores the theme of transformation and change. The narrative follows a chronological order, beginning with the world's creation and ending with the reign of Julius Caesar. Ovid retells traditional Greek and Roman myths, focusing on the transformations of gods, heroes, and mortals as they undergo physical, emotional, and psychological changes that reflect the complexities of the human experience. Some of the most famous stories in the Metamorphoses include the tales of Apollo and Daphne, Pyramus and Thisbe, Narcissus and Echo, and the fall of Icarus.
While modern scholars consider this epic poem to be Ovid's magnum opus, the work was not well received by its contemporaries; the Roman emperor Augustus went so far as to exile Ovid and ban his books from Rome's libraries. Today, this work is considered one of the most influential works in Western culture and has inspired countless authors like Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Dante.

In You and Yours, Naomi Shihab Nye continues her conversation with ordinary people whose lives become, through her empathetic use of poetic language, extraordinary. Nye writes of local life in her inner-city Texas neighborhood, about rural schools and urban communities she’s visited in this country, as well as the daily rituals of Jews and Palestinians who live in the war-torn Middle East.

    The Day
I missed the day on which it was said others should not have certain weapons, but we could. Not only could, but should, and do. I missed that day. Was I sleeping? I might have been digging in the yard, doing something small and slow as usual. Or maybe I wasn’t born yet. What about all the other people who aren’t born? Who will tell them?

Balancing direct language with a suggestive “aslantness,” Nye probes the fragile connection between language and meaning. She never shies from the challenge of trying to name the mysterious logic of childhood or speak truth to power in the face of the horrors of war. She understands our lives are marked by tragedy, inequity, and misunderstanding, and that our best chance of surviving our losses and shortcomings is to maintain a heightened awareness of the sacred in all things.

This audiobook is narrated by the author.

The audiobook of Tim Key's least ambitious project to date. A slim book of the crap he’s been churning out over the past eighteen months.
Poems about men getting stuck in webs, poems about the ancient city of Canterbury, poems about canoodling with a rose.
A prolific sod, he’s selected ninety of his trademark vignettes and packed them off to Emily Juniper for her to fling onto pages and shape into a book.
Discussions ensued about what, if anything, the point of it all was, and a healthy debate as to whether it should be broken up into chapters and, if so, why. All of these discussions are documented in the leftover space around the poems. The result is a splurge of words which very occasionally shine a light on modern times.
It is the third book Tim and Emily have generated together.
