  Originally published in 1929, William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury was the author's fourth novel. Though not initially successful, the novel has since been recognized as one of Faulkner's best works, and one of the best works of Southern literature in literary history, as well as instrumental in the development of the stream-of-consciousness literary technique. Faulkner would go on to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949.

The two older ones, setting out in hopes of being the heir, were rude to a dwarf on the way and became trapped in ravines. When the youngest son went the dwarf asked where he was going, and he told him. The dwarf told him it was in a castle, and gave him an iron wand to open the gates and two loaves to feed to the lions inside. Then he had to get the water before the clock struck 12 when the gates would shut again.

  "The Turn of the Screw" by Henry James is a gothic novella written in the late 19th century. The story centers around a young governess who is assigned to care for two orphaned children at a remote English estate called Bly, where strange and unsettling events occur, raising questions about both the environment and the children themselves. 
  At the beginning of the novella, a group of friends gathers around a fire on Christmas Eve. During their conversation, they discuss ghostly experiences. One of the members, Douglas, hints at a chilling tale involving two children and a dreadful apparition that appeared to them. This sets the stage for the governess's recounting of her experiences at Bly. 
  Upon her arrival at the estate, she is captivated by the beauty of the children, Miles and Flora. However, beneath this charm lies an unsettling tension, particularly related to the previous governess, who died under mysterious circumstances. The opening sequence effectively builds an atmosphere of suspense, promising a haunting exploration of innocence, corrupted motives, and the supernatural.

  Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. EDUCATION THAT EDUCATES: Perhaps I am safe in saying that during the last ten days you have not given much systematic effort to book study in the usual sense. When interruptions come such as we have just had, taking you away from your regular routine work and study, and the preparation of routine lessons is interrupted, the first thought to some may be that this time is lost, in so far as it relates to education in the ordinary sense; that it is so much time taken away from that part of one's life that should be devoted to acquiring education.
