Sinopsis

The "Collected Works of Henry David Thoreau (Illustrated)" offers an extensive look into the mind of one of America's foremost transcendentalist writers. This volume encompasses Thoreau's essays, journals, and poetry, characterized by his distinctive literary style that blends romanticism with keen observations of nature and society. The illustrations complement his vivid prose, enriching the exploration of themes such as individuality, civil disobedience, and the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world. Thoreau's reflections resonate within the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century, positioning his work against the backdrop of America's growing industrialization and societal change. Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was a philosopher, naturalist, and abolitionist whose experiences and beliefs profoundly shaped his writings. Living for two years in a small cabin at Walden Pond, Thoreau sought to connect with nature and to critique modern society. This period of introspection led him to articulate his views on simple living and self-reliance, grounding his scholarly pursuits in lived experience and environmental stewardship. This illustrated collection is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the depths of Thoreau's philosophy and its relevance today. By immersing the reader in his eloquent prose and reflections, this volume not only honors his legacy but also invites contemporary readers to engage with his timeless insights on nature, society, and personal freedom.

The intriguing, in-depth story of the most powerful woman in Canadian politics. *A NATIONAL BESTSELLER*

Catherine Tsalikis traces Chrystia Freeland's remarkable journey from the northwestern Alberta town of Peace River to Moscow, London, and New York, where she spent two decades as a journalist, to the halls of Parliament Hill as deputy prime minister and finance minister in Justin Trudeau's Liberal government. Ambitious and talented with a work ethic to match, Freeland has had an impressive run since she entered politics in 2013: spearheading major trade negotiations, expertly navigating relations with an erratic US president, speaking out about human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia, and standing up to Vladimir Putin's aggressions in Ukraine.

With her impeccable research, seasoned perspective, and accessible style, Tsalikis brings Freeland's story to life. The defining moments and experiences that shaped Freeland's particular worldview illuminate the answers to larger social questions: how to live a good, useful life; how to hold fast to guiding principles; how to break through glass ceilings. This is a unique behind-the-curtains look at Canadian politics through the story of a trailblazing woman.

Edward Vernon-Harcourt (1757–1847) was Archbishop of York from 1807 until his death at the age of 90.

As a younger son of a wealthy land-owning family, Archbishop Harcourt depended on good family and political connections to make progress in the Church. He had to combine his responsibility for one of the largest dioceses in the Church of England with his duties in parliament and at court and with providing for his family of 16 children. More supportive of reform of both parliament and the church than most of his fellow bishops, Harcourt took steps to improve the training of ordinands in his diocese, encouraged the building of over 100 new churches to cope with population growth in the industrial towns of the West Riding and made some progress in tackling pluralism and non-residence. He was not afraid to stand up for a cause he believed to be right.

In this biography, Tony Vernon-Harcourt examines the professional and family life of one of the last aristocratic bishops in the Church of England.

In the 1960s and 1970s, no actor personified cool, calm and collected like Steve McQueen, whose suave anti-hero protagonists made men jealous and women swoon. As actor Donald Logue puts it in The Tao of Steve, “Steve is the prototypical cool American male. He's the guy on his horse, the guy alone. He has his own code of honor, his own code of ethics, his own rules of living. He never, ever tries to impress the women, but he always gets the girl." And indeed, that was the case not only in movies like The Thomas Crown Affair, Bullitt, The Getaway, and Papillon, but also in real life. Actress Ali MacGraw, who later became one of his wives, described his effect on women: "I remember seeing him across the swimming pool and my knees were knocking. He radiated such macho energy. Men wanted to be like him. Uptight society ladies and biker molls wanted to be with him." But unlike many actors who become this type of heartthrob, McQueen seemed to have the bona fides.
To accompany the rough-hewn appearance of Charles Bronson’s new class of hero, the typical script gave his remarkably enduring persona little to say in terms of dialogue that would reveal his inner thoughts. With minimal text, even those he attempts to help are unsure of his intentions, and few clues are offered by which the viewer can come to know his mind. As the grotesqueness of his characters’ violent acts increased, so did the heinous deeds of the criminals he fought, upping the ante to an eager public in search of a simple cure for its social ills. In a career of almost eighty films and a total body of work totaling 160 appearances including television, Bronson pushed the envelope of what graphic action the studios were willing to offer, what the censors would accept, and what the sensibilities of movie-goers were able to endure more than anyone in his era.
