Sinossi

In 'History of the Inquisition of Spain,' Henry Charles Lea meticulously chronicles the development and implementation of the Spanish Inquisition, unveiling its political, social, and religious ramifications. Through a blend of rigorous historical research and vivid narrative, Lea exposes the complex interplay between ecclesiastical authority and state power, while employing a critical lens towards primary sources that illuminate the darker aspects of this tumultuous period. His work not only serves as a comprehensive examination of the Inquisition's mechanism of control but also situates it within the broader tapestry of 15th to 17th-century Spain, highlighting its role in shaping national identity and intolerance. Henry Charles Lea was a prominent American historian and advocate of religious liberty, whose background in law and strong interest in social justice profoundly influenced his writing. His extensive research into European history and the dynamics of religious persecution informed his nuanced understanding of the Inquisition's impact on both victims and society at large. Lea's personal commitment to liberal causes and profound sense of empathy for the oppressed drive the moral urgency of his narrative. This seminal work is essential reading for scholars and general readers alike who seek to comprehend the intricate relationships between faith, power, and violence. Lea'Äôs blend of scholarly rigor and narrative flair makes it an invaluable contribution to the understanding of religious intolerance and its enduring legacy.

Despite their cultural influence, the grand narrative of the dinosaur story is rarely told. Most of us have heard of Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus, but these two dinosaurs lived more than eighty million years apart—a greater span of time than the entire post-T. rex history of the planet. Furthermore, we often know even less about the environments these animals lived in.

The Shortest History of the Dinosaurs tells the full story, a 230-million-year epic of small beginnings, spectacular golden periods, and eventual global domination—before an unthinkable asteroid event brought everything to a screeching halt. We learn that, for millions of years in the Triassic, dinosaurs were dog-sized—but slowly developing evolutionary traits like feathers and warm-bloodedness. In the Jurassic Period, these traits—and others like laying eggs and growing specialized air sacs—led to an era of rapid growth in dinosaur population and physical size. As Pangea continued to break apart, during the Cretaceous Period, dinosaurs traversed the globe, adapting to air and water—before a six-mile-wide asteroid hit Central America.

Using fossil discoveries and fresh understandings of genetics and evolution, author Riley Black reveals the startling relationships dinosaurs shared with each other, the land they lived on, other animal species, and the earth.

The epic Battle of Iwo Jima is recounted through the stories of twenty-eight American soldiers who showed uncommon valor during one of WWII’s most bitter conflicts. When the smoke cleared on Iwo Jima in March of 1945, nineteen-thousand American Marines had been wounded and seven-thousand were dead, a casualty rate of nearly thirty-nine percent. Lasting over a month, Iwo was the Marines’ bloodiest battle of the Second World War and the only Pacific battle in which a U.S. landing force suffered more casualties than it inflicted. It was also the most highly decorated single engagement in Marine Corps history. This volume captures the bravery of those who fought in that epic battle through the stories of twenty-two Marines and five Navy personnel who received the Medal of Honor in recognition of their gallantry under fire.

Battleship Commander explores Lee's life from boyhood in Kentucky through his eventual service as commander of the fast battleships from 1942 to 1945. Said to be down to earth, modest, forgiving, friendly, and with a wry sense of humor, Lee eschewed the media and, to the extent possible, left administrative details to others. During his service in the Navy Department from 1939 to 1942, Lee prepared the U.S. Navy for war at sea, and was involved in inspecting designs for battleships, cruisers, aircraft carriers, and destroyers. He sent observers to Britain to report on Royal Navy operations during the war against Germany and made plans to send an action team to mainland China to observe conditions for possible later Allied landings there.

In 1942 Willis Lee became commander of the first division of fast battleships to operate in the Pacific. During that service, he commanded Task Force 64, which achieved a tide-turning victory in a night battle near Guadalcanal in November 1942.

Continuing his career of service near the end of the war, Lee, in the summer of 1945, directed anti-kamikaze research efforts in Casco Bay, Maine. While Lee's wartime successes and failures are compelling, what is here in this biography is a balanced look at the man and officer.
