Summary

On a dull December day, in the year of grace 1771, a coach drew up at the door of the Convent of the Abbaye-aux-Bois, Rue de Sève, and three persons alighted from it—a lady advanced in years, very simply dressed; a man of distinguished appearance, easily recognisable as a foreigner; and a pale and delicate-looking little girl. These persons were no other than the famous Madame Geoffrin; Prince Massalski, Bishop of Wilna;and his eight years old niece, the little Princesse Hélène.
The Prince-Bishop, implicated in the late Polish revolution, had barely escaped arrest by flight. He was bringing to Paris his niece and his nephew, orphans who had been placed under his guardianship. It will here be necessary to cast a retrospective glance at the series of events which brought this exiled family to Paris.

'As Dr Eger would say, "you cannot heal what you do not feel." We applaud Breda for having the courage to face her past so that all of us who read this book will connect to our own purpose and story.' Jordan Engle, grandson of Edith Eger, author of The Choice
Breda O'Toole's early life was marked by abandonment. When she sought help, she entered a mental health system that continued the pattern – misdiagnosing her, medicating her into silence, binding her in a straitjacket for 11 days and subjecting her to 29 rounds of electroconvulsive therapy.
Refusing to be defined by the failures of the system, Breda fought to reclaim her health, her voice and her life. Through courage, determination and a relentless search for dignity, she uncovered a sense of self that had long been buried.
Unseen is the story of a mental health system that too often ignored the human being at its heart. More so, it is the story of the fierce capacity of the human spirit to heal when we are safely allowed to reveal and feel our pain so that we can move forward with hope.
'When a dysfunctional system adds trauma to the already traumatised, it takes a powerful person to overcome it and thrive. Breda O'Toole is a shining example to us all of the courage of the human heart.' Fiona Brennan, author of The Positive Habit

A gripping and unforgettable true story of bravery and patriotism in the face of bitter hatred.

Abraham Bolden was a young African American Secret Service agent in Chicago when he was asked by John F. Kennedy himself to join the White House Secret Service detail. For Bolden, it was a dream come true—and an encouraging sign of the charismatic president's vision for a new America.

But the dream quickly turned sour. Bolden found himself regularly subjected to open hostility and blatant racism, and he was appalled by the White House team's irresponsible approach to security. In the wake of JFK's assassination, Bolden sought to expose the agency's negligence, only to find himself the victim of a sinister conspiracy. The Echo from Dealey Plaza is the story of the terrible price paid by one man for his commitment to truth and justice.

Sir Keir Starmer made the leap from Leader of the Opposition to Prime Minister in only four years, one of just a handful of politicians to have done so since 1945. Yet the landslide majority that Labour secured under him in July 2024 has been described as 'loveless' and his first months in Downing Street were overshadowed by rows and controversies, turning what should have been a political honeymoon into a period of sustained turbulence.
In this fully revised and updated edition of his 2021 biography, Michael Ashcroft traces how Starmer went from schoolboy socialist to radical lawyer and Director of Public Prosecutions before – aged fifty-two – becoming an MP, then Labour leader and ultimately the occupant of No. 10.
Revealing previously unknown details which help to explain what makes Starmer tick, this careful examination of Britain's first Labour Prime Minister for fourteen years offers voters the chance to assess his character and his political instincts. Having turned his party into an election-winning machine, his goal is to transform Britain into one of the most progressive states in the world. Does he have what it takes to succeed?

In the pages that follow, we will explore the life of a man whose name has become synonymous with genius, innovation, and revolutionary scientific thought. From humble beginnings in Ulm, Germany, to his later years as a celebrated figure on the world stage, Albert Einstein's life story is one of curiosity, perseverance, and ground-breaking discovery. Born on March 14, 1879, Einstein's early years hinted at the extraordinary path he was destined to tread. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and his uncanny ability to unravel the mysteries of the universe set him on a course that would forever change the landscape of modern physics. This book is more than a mere collection of dates and events; it is a chronicle of a man's quest to understand the fundamental workings of our universe. As we journey through the chapters that follow, we will witness the emergence of his revolutionary ideas the Special Theory of Relativity, the General Theory of Relativity, and the famous equation E=mc². Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson celebrates over forty years on stage and screen with a uniquely entertaining, eye-opening and enthralling memoir.
The iconic actor best known for his role as Jim McDonald in Coronation Street, Lawson unveils a life as dramatic off-screen as his on-screen roles. In his own words, he recounts his shenanigans at boarding school, his experience of the Troubles in his native Northern Ireland, his time at drama school and his first acting roles – as well many boisterous nights out and a short-lived attempt to run an illicit club night in 1980s East London.
As Lawson’s career unfolds, we encounter many fellow actors who are now household names, resulting in many hilarious anecdotes. But he is not afraid to settle scores and call out cases of injustice and abuse in the industry. And he is equally unflinching in his portrayal of his private life, with details of his marriages and personal tragedies.
Fans of Coronation Street will love the details of his nearly three-decade tenure on Britain’s beloved soap – as Lawson shares behind-the-scenes pranks, cast disputes and the chaos of celebrity culture. But the book also provides compelling accounts of the many high-profile theatre, TV and film productions he has been involved in – not to mention his other passions such as horse racing and field sports.
