Summary

Heinrich Kramer's seminal work, "The Hammer of Witches: Malleus Maleficarum," is an authoritative treatise on witchcraft, reflecting the tumultuous socio-political climate of 15th-century Europe. Composed in a methodical and persuasive style, this book blends theological arguments with legal precedents and empirical observations to validate the persecution of witches. The text is meticulously structured, featuring a tripartite division that explores the nature of witchcraft, the legal ramifications, and the methods of detection and prosecution. Its historical context is critical, as it emerged during the height of the witch hunts, providing insight into the intersection of religion and law in shaping societal norms and fears of the time. Heinrich Kramer, a Dominican friar and inquisitor, was profoundly influenced by the prevailing hysteria surrounding witchcraft and heresy. His experiences in the field, alongside his theological training, cultivated a nuanced understanding of the tension between religious doctrine and popular superstition. Kramer's collaboration with Jacob Sprenger in this venture underscores the book's authenticity and authority, as both authors sought to establish a unified approach to combating witchcraft amidst widespread societal paranoia. "The Hammer of Witches" is an indispensable read for scholars of both history and literature, offering a fascinating glimpse into the dark depths of human belief and institutional power. Its analytical depth and historical significance warrant a place on the shelves of anyone interested in the roots of modern witch hunts and the complexities of moral and legalistic reasoning in society. Engage with Kramer's work to better understand the harrowing legacy of witch trials and the long-standing impacts on contemporary views of justice and paranoia.

J.B. Rhine (1895 - 1980), widely considered to be the "Father of Modern Parapsychology," was the world’s leading investigator of psychic phenomena, ESP and the paranormal. He founded the parapsychology research lab at Duke University and the Journal of Parapsychology. Dr. Rhine, who coined the term "extrasensory perception" (ESP) to describe the apparent ability of some people to acquire information without the use of the known five senses), wrote several books on ESP and the paranormal. Rhine investigated ghosts, telepathy, poltergeists, and other unseen parapsychology phenomena from 1927 to 1965 at his Duke laboratory, and for several years after that at a private laboratory. The following was recorded from a Rhine lecture on psychokinesis and his ESP experiments.

Stone by Stone - The Magnificent...

    Robert M. Thorson

There once may have been 250,000 miles of stone walls in America's Northeast, stretching farther than the distance to the moon. And even though most are crumbling today, they contain a magnificent scientific and cultural story.

Stone walls tell nothing less than the story of how New England was formed, and in Robert Thorson's hands they live and breathe. Millions of years ago, New England's stones belonged to ancient mountains thrust up by prehistoric collisions between continents. Buried again over centuries by forest and soil buildup, the stones gradually worked their way back to the surface, only to become impediments to the farmers cultivating the land in the eighteenth century, who piled them into "linear landfills," a place to hold the stones. Usually the biggest investment on a farm, often exceeding that of the land and buildings combined, stone walls became a defining element of the Northeast's landscape, and a symbol of the shift to an agricultural economy.

Stone walls layer time like Russian dolls, their smallest elements reflecting the longest spans, and Thorson urges us to study them, for each stone has its own story. Linking geological history to the early American experience, Stone by Stone presents a fascinating picture of the land the Pilgrims settled, allowing us to see and understand it with new eyes.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 54 by John Andrew Storey, Rebirth narrated by Christa Michel. The print edition can be found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. 2. The eBook of Bodhi Leaves No. 54 can be downloaded from the BPS website.

    Excerpt:

There has been a prevailing tendency in science to take a wholly materialistic view of life and the universe. This has perhaps been a natural reaction against the superstitions of past ages which have often masqueraded as religious truth. Happily this extreme reaction is now less apparent than it was, and there now seems to be among scientists a more open-minded approach to life and its phenomena. Parapsychological phenomena, which only a decade ago were not considered to be worthy of serious attention, are now being studied with considerable interest.

    ...

The aim of this essay is to review the evidence and examine the arguments for rebirth in an attempt to make a modest contribution to our understanding of the doctrine. We shall see first that the doctrine is very ancient and very widespread. We shall see that it reflects the natural order which from our observations we know to be cyclical. We shall have a brief look at the evidence from the claimed memories of former lives. We shall try to determine the nature of that which is reborn. And finally we shall examine one of the ways by which the process of rebirth may take place. In this way I hope to make our survey comprehensive so that our evaluation can be truly scientific.

Posterior Analytics is a treatise written by Aristotle in which he explores the nature of knowledge and how we acquire it. Aristotle argues that knowledge is obtained through a process of demonstration, which involves the use of syllogistic reasoning to arrive at a conclusion. He distinguishes between different types of demonstration, including demonstration from necessary principles and demonstration from things known to be true. Aristotle also examines the role of definition in acquiring knowledge. He argues that definitions are necessary for understanding the nature of a thing and for establishing the principles that underlie it. He also emphasizes the importance of causal analysis in acquiring knowledge, as it allows us to understand the relationships between different things and to identify the underlying causes of phenomena. Read in English, unabridged.
