Summary

In "Snagged and Sunk; Or, The Adventures of a Canvas Canoe," Harry Castlemon employs vivid narrative techniques to weave a rich tapestry of adventure that captures the essence of 19th-century American outdoor life. This novel navigates the trials and tribulations of young protagonists as they embark on thrilling canoeing escapades, navigating not just rivers but the tumultuous waters of friendship and personal growth. Castlemon's literary style is approachable yet lively, embodying a robust, descriptive prose that resonates with both youth and adult readers, and it speaks to the burgeoning outdoor culture of the time, reflecting societal shifts towards nature exploration and leisure activities. Harry Castlemon, an influential figure of the late 1800s, was deeply inspired by his own love of nature and adventure, and his experiences informed his writing. As a former riverboat pilot and avid outdoor enthusiast, Castlemon sought to inspire a sense of adventure in a young audience, blending entertainment with moral lessons. His works often reflect his passion for youth and the importance of rugged individualism, traits that resonate strongly in this narrative. I wholeheartedly recommend "Snagged and Sunk" to readers who cherish adventure tales entwined with themes of camaraderie, resilience, and the joys of the great outdoors. Castlemon's ability to engage the imagination while imparting valuable life lessons makes this book a timeless treasure for adventurers of all ages.

The skin’s importance is often overlooked by about a half of the world’s population – mostly men – although this is rapidly changing. Even so, most of those who do worry about their skin are mainly interested in the areas that show like the face, neck and hands.
However, the skin is not only the largest organ on the body (human or otherwise), it is also the membrane that literally holds us together. On a recent visit to a dermatologist, I described a small cut on my hand as ‘nothing serious’. The dermatologist’s response surprised me. “Your skin is not only there to keep bodily fluids in”, he said, “but to keep pathogens out. Every time that barrier is damaged, it makes it easier for bacteria to get in. Bacteria can cause infections such as sepsis and blood poisoning which can be irreversible and so lethal”. I am no longer so blasé about nicks and scratches as I once was in my silly, macho male way.
Skin is also very sensitive to what is going on beneath it, which means that acne, pimples, dry or oily skin are early warnings of underlying problems. The problem for most people is that they treat the symptoms – the outbreak – rather than the underlying cause. This is hardly surprising, since skin care companies make hundreds of billions from selling creams, potions and lotions to mask these symptoms. This effectively allows the condition to continue.
Having said that, continuous, regular skin care started from an early age is a good thing. However, you need impartial information from a specialist before deciding what kind of skin care regimen to follow. Just doing what one’s parents do, or gathering a basketful of products from the local pharmacy is not good enough.
Do your own research, and ask the right people, before you decide on how to protect yourself.

In the fourth tale in this beloved series, villainous Sebastian Eels returns to Eerie-on-Sea, thrusting Herbie and Violet into a new adventure involving a missing girl, a spooky wax museum, and a dangerous clockwork robot.

Herbie Lemon, Lost-and-Founder at the Grand Nautilus Hotel, and his fearless friend Violet Parma have unearthed many secrets in their village of Eerie-on-Sea: secrets lurking beneath the waves, lapping onto the beaches, and lying behind locked doors. When their brilliant and ruthless nemesis, Sebastian Eels, returns with a plan to open the long-shuttered waxworks museum, Herbie and Violet suspect nefarious motives. Their investigation leads them into the dark Netherways below the town—and into the tragic past of the famous toymaker and inventor Ludovic Festergrimm and his doomed daughter, Pandora. Sebastian Eels is convinced that within the story of Festergrimm is the key to Eerie's deepest secret—a secret in which Herbie himself plays a crucial part—and he'll stop at nothing to uncover it, including bringing a terrifying clockwork legend back to life. With echoes of fairy tales and monster movies, plus a dismembered finger or two, this is a deliciously creepy addition to a fantastical mystery series that is perfectly calibrated to thrill middle-grade listeners.
