Summary

Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly, is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book opens with a Kentucky farmer named Arthur Shelby facing the loss of his farm because of debts. Even though he and his wife Emily Shelby believe that they have a benevolent relationship with their slaves, Shelby decides to raise the needed funds by selling two of them—Uncle Tom, a middle-aged man with a wife and children, and Harry, the son of Emily Shelby’s maid Eliza—to a slave trader. Emily Shelby is averse to this idea because she had promised her maid that her child would never be sold; Emily's son, George Shelby, hates to see Tom go because he sees the man as his friend and mentor.

When Eliza overhears Mr. and Mrs. Shelby discussing plans to sell Tom and Harry, Eliza determines to run away with her son. The novel states that Eliza made this decision because she fears losing her only surviving child (she had already miscarried two children). Eliza departs that night, leaving a note of apology to her mistress.

Tom is sold and placed on a riverboat which sets sail down the Mississippi River. While on board, Tom meets and befriends a young white girl named Eva. Eva's father Augustine St. Clare buys Tom from the slave trader and takes him with the family to their home in New Orleans. Tom and Eva begin to relate to one another because of the deep Christian faith they both share.

    Toby never really left.
They buried him. They burned the house. They did what they could to erase him, but he came back…just for me.
I feel him every moment. I’m his. Every fiber of my soul screams for him. My brother. My twin.
He tells me I’m beautiful when I ache. He calms the pain when my body trembles beneath him, desperate, ready to surrender to him. Only him
The others don’t understand. They cry. They scream. They try to take me away, but I won’t go. I won’t let them have me, not when Toby fills me with the only thing I crave.
They say I’m sick. That I’m dangerous.
But Toby says I’m perfect. And when he holds me, when his lips burn on mine, when his fingers sink into me, I know he’s right.
His name is all I need. His touch is all I crave.
This body. This skin. This love.
    It’s all just borrowed.

"Mr. Coombes was sick of life. He walked away from his unhappy home, and, sick not only of his own existence but of everybody else's, turned aside down Gaswork Lane to avoid the town, and, crossing the wooden bridge that goes over the canal to Starling's Cottages, was presently alone in the damp pine woods and out of sight and sound of human habitation. He would stand it no longer. He repeated aloud with blasphemies unusual to him that he would stand it no longer.

Henrik Ibsen, the renowned Norwegian playwright, is celebrated for his influential contributions to modern theater. Born in 1828, Ibsen's early life was marked by financial struggles and personal hardships. However, his unwavering determination and artistic talent propelled him to become one of the most prominent figures in the world of drama. Ibsen's works, including "A Doll's House," "Hedda Gabler," and "Ghosts," challenged societal conventions, delving into themes of individuality, morality, and the consequences of societal expectations.

Ibsen's legacy lies in his revolutionary approach to playwriting, which defied the norms of his time. His plays were characterized by complex characters and thought-provoking narratives that explored the human psyche. By confronting controversial subjects such as gender roles, marital relationships, and societal hypocrisy, Ibsen shattered the boundaries of Victorian drama, laying the groundwork for realism and naturalism in theater. His emphasis on psychological realism and his commitment to social critique left an indelible mark on the dramatic arts, influencing generations of playwrights and directors.

In addition to his profound impact on the theater, Ibsen's artistry extended to his skillful use of symbolism and poetic language. His plays were meticulously crafted, with each word and gesture carrying deep significance. Ibsen's ability to weave intricate layers of meaning into his works elevated them to the level of profound literature. His writings provided a lens through which audiences could examine their own lives and the world around them, encouraging critical reflection and sparking dialogue on societal issues.
