The Pacific Theater of World War II was the culmination of decades of tension, territorial disputes, and ideological differences between Japan and the Allied Powers, particularly the United States. The roots of the conflict can be traced back to Japan’s rise as an imperial power in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Seeking to expand its influence across East Asia and the Pacific, Japan embarked on a campaign of military conquest and economic domination, often at the expense of its neighbors.

By the 1930s, Japan’s aggressive expansionist policies became more pronounced, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and escalating with the full-scale war against China in 1937. These actions alarmed Western powers, who viewed Japan’s ambitions as a direct challenge to their interests in the region. The United States, in particular, responded by imposing economic sanctions and cutting off vital supplies, including oil, to curtail Japan’s militarism. However, these measures only further inflamed tensions, as Japan viewed them as an existential threat to its survival and growth as a global power.

The turning point came on December 7, 1941, with Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This audacious assault on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii aimed to neutralize American naval power and secure Japan’s dominance in the Pacific. Although the attack achieved significant tactical success, crippling much of the U.S. fleet, it also galvanized American public opinion and led to the United States’ entry into World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor marked the beginning of a brutal and protracted conflict that would span nearly four years and claim millions of lives.

A former football champion’s engrossing personal story of spirituality and rebellion, and an inspiring call to action against systemic racism.
The son of a Jamaican father and a Quebecois mother, Balarama Holness spent his earliest, most formative years on an ashram in West Virginia, learning the principles of equity and austerity, which would guide him through life. It wasn’t until he returned to Montreal at age ten with his mother and twin brother that he encountered virulent racism for the first time. Faced with a system that seemed stacked against him, Holness initially fell between the cracks.
Eyes on the Horizon is Holness’s story of lifting himself up through the power of self-determination, spirituality and no small amount of rebellion to confront the systemic racism of his city and his country. He accomplished this first through football, going all the way to a Grey Cup championship, and later through activism and politics.
Holness’s personal journey is connected to the social history of Canada, Quebec and the United States. Committed to reshaping society as we know it, he uses lessons from his own life to teach others about racism past and present, and to help people better understand how human beings should live and how to build a truly peaceful and just society for our children.

Simplicity comes into being when there is freedom from the desire to achieve
    • One who is sincere can never be simple because he who is trying to be sincere always has the desire to pattern or approximate himself to an idea.
    • Self-knowledge can be discovered more fully, deeply, widely, only when there is passive awareness, which is not the exertion of will.
    • In the search for self-knowledge we get caught in self-consciousness. Being caught we make the thing in which one is caught the most important thing.
    • To go beyond self-consciousness there must be freedom from the desire to achieve a result, because the achievement of a result is what the mind wants.
    • Q: Would you please explain what you mean by dying daily?
    • Q: How does a truth when repeated become a lie? What really is a lie?
    • Q: I think I can help, but whatever I say or do to another is interpreted as interference and as domineering. Why does this happen to me?
    • Q: What is aloneness? Is it a mystical state?

    Composing Capital - Classical...

    Marianna Ritchey

The familiar old world of classical music, with its wealthy donors and ornate concert halls, is changing. The patronage of a wealthy few is being replaced by that of corporations, leading to new unions of classical music and contemporary capitalism. In Composing Capital, Marianna Ritchey lays bare the appropriation of classical music by the current neoliberal regime, arguing that artists, critics, and institutions have aligned themselves—and, by extension, classical music itself—with free-market ideology. More specifically, she demonstrates how classical music has lent its cachet to marketing schemes, tech firm-sponsored performances, and global corporate partnerships. As Ritchey shows, the neoliberalization of classical music has put music at the service of contemporary capitalism, blurring the line between creativity and entrepreneurship, and challenging us to imagine how a noncommodified musical practice might be possible in today’s world.
