Sinopsis

Cultural Revolution Shifts explores how major cultural upheavals reshape art, politics, and societal norms. It argues that these periods, though disruptive, are critical catalysts for societal evolution, forcing re-evaluation of values and power structures. The book examines how revolutionary events impact artistic expression and the subsequent evolution of political thought. For example, societal changes often lead to new forms of art that reflect altered values, or political manifestos become artistic statements.

The book analyzes specific cultural revolutions across different historical periods and geographic locations, drawing upon primary source documents, artwork analysis, political manifestos, and sociological studies. It uniquely incorporates previously untranslated historical texts and newly discovered artistic collections. Rather than a chronological narrative, the book uses comparative analysis, identifying shared threads and divergent paths to understand cultural change mechanisms.

The book begins by defining "cultural revolution" and establishing an analytical framework. Early chapters explore theoretical underpinnings, with the core dedicated to case studies. By integrating perspectives from sociology, political science, and art history, Cultural Revolution Shifts provides a holistic understanding of cultural revolutions and their consequences, appealing to students, academics, and anyone interested in history, art, and political science.

In the wake of the blockbuster television success of "Dancing with the Stars," competitive ballroom dance has become a subject of new fascination—and renewed scrutiny. Known by its practitioners as DanceSport, ballroom is a significant dance form and a fascinating cultural phenomenon. In this first in-depth study of the sport, dancer and dance historian Juliet McMains explores the "Glamour Machine" that drives the thriving industry, delving into both the pleasures and perils of its seductions. She further explores the broader social issues invoked in American DanceSport: representation of "Latin," economics that often foster inequality, and issues of identity, including gender, race, class, and sexuality. Putting ballroom dance in the larger contexts of culture and history, Glamour Addiction makes an important contribution to dance studies, while giving new and veteran enthusiasts a unique and unprecedented glimpse behind the scenes.

1974 was a busy year for Mel Brooks. Although still recovering after a series of failed projects threatened his career, he pulled off a one-two punch that saw the release of two of the most beloved American comedies ever made: Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. Although both films are well-known, the stories beyond the making of each movie are less so. How did they come to be, and how did the era's culture and politics not only permit them to be made, but help them to become enduring comedy classics?

With their riotous parodies of Westerns and classic horror movies, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were not only hilarious. They played with charged social and cultural themes in an inimitable way, raising the bar for modern comedies even as they reshaped the two genres they were sending up. Blazing Saddles Meets Young Frankenstein: The 50th Anniversary of the Year of Mel Brooks explores in depth the zeitgeist and cinematic alchemy that led to 1974 becoming "the year of Mel Brooks."

The Carib civilization, known for their resilience and military prowess, was one of the dominant forces in the Caribbean before and during the early phases of European colonization. The Caribs, who were part of the larger Arawakan language family, developed a distinct culture that set them apart from other indigenous groups in the region. Their territory spanned many of the islands in the Lesser Antilles, with notable populations in Dominica, Saint Vincent, and Grenada. While they were widely recognized for their fierce resistance against European colonizers, their rich history and cultural achievements also played a significant role in shaping the Caribbean.
The early origins of the Caribs are a subject of ongoing research, but they are believed to have migrated from South America, possibly from the Orinoco River Basin in present-day Venezuela. Over time, they settled in various parts of the Caribbean, with their most prominent presence being on the islands of the Lesser Antilles. The Caribs are often distinguished from their neighbors, the Arawaks, due to their more aggressive and militaristic nature, a characteristic that would become critical in their dealings with the European powers who arrived on their shores.
Carib society was organized around a hierarchical structure with a chief, or ouin (sometimes known as karifuna), at the top, followed by warriors, farmers, and fishermen. Despite their reputation as fierce fighters, the Caribs were also skilled agriculturalists and fishermen. Their diet was rich in cassava, corn, fruits, and fish, which they caught using canoes made from hollowed trees. The Caribs' ability to navigate the seas using their advanced knowledge of the stars and ocean currents made them formidable maritime traders and warriors. They built large, ocean-going canoes capable of carrying multiple warriors, enabling them to wage successful raids across the Caribbean islands.
