As the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma opens for settlement, drifter and cowboy Donald Carver aims to stake his claim on the old Half Diamond H ranch. But rivalries run deep in the dying days of the Old West, and Carver soon finds himself at odds with the shady mayor of Oval Springs and his cronies.

When murder enters the mix, Carver realizes he'll have to clean up the corrupt county seat himself before he can settle down. But even as he plans his future on a prosperous farm, the wild in Carver still calls to him. Will he embrace his tumbleweed ways, or can the steadfast affection of a schoolteacher convince this roving cowboy to finally hang up his hat?

This acclaimed novel based on true events in the 1928 Tour de France “is a powerful story of grim determination and one man’s forlorn hope to conquer fear” (Publishers Weekly).   In 1928, the Ravat-Wonder cycling team became the first English-speaking peloton to compete in the Tour de France. The riders, hailing from New Zealand and Australia, were treated as exotics and isolated by language and cultural barriers. Underfinanced and undertrained, the team faced one of the toughest routes in the race’s history: 5,476 kilometers over unsealed roads through a landscape heavy with the legacy of the Great War. 162 cyclists began the race that year; only 42 finished.   A deeply introspective book, The Invisible Mile is narrated by a fictional, unnamed rider on the Ravat-Wonder team. Speaking no French and knowing few of his fellow riders, his race becomes a confrontation with memories of the Great War and a quest to understand his own place in its history. He rides on the alternating highs of cocaine and opium, pain and pleasure, victory and defeat. As he nears his final mile along the northern battlefields, trauma, exertion, and his personal demons take over.  “Bruising, beautiful and ultimately transcendent, there’s a perfect thought on sport, humanity or endurance on just about every page.” —Markus Zusak, author of The Book Thief

Out of prison and on his own, Peter Fury struggles to find a place in the world Peter Fury has been in prison for fifteen years and four days, and every minute has been an eternity. He was jailed for killing a woman whose greed had poisoned his family—an honorable crime that merely drove the Furys further apart from one another. On the gloomy day when he steps back into the free world, Peter’s parents are dead and his siblings have scattered. All he has left is himself—but Peter is still a Fury, and one Fury is enough to do almost anything.   In a matter of hours, Peter realizes there is nothing left for him in England. Rather than wither and die like so many ex-cons, this onetime dreamer plans to immigrate to New York and find a new life there. But he has too much history in this blighted dockside town, and it may not be ready to let him go just yet.  An End and a Beginning is the fifth and final book of James Hanley’s acclaimed Furys Saga.
