Sinopse

As the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma opens for settlement, drifter and cowboy Donald Carver aims to stake his claim on the old Half Diamond H ranch. But rivalries run deep in the dying days of the Old West, and Carver soon finds himself at odds with the shady mayor of Oval Springs and his cronies.

When murder enters the mix, Carver realizes he'll have to clean up the corrupt county seat himself before he can settle down. But even as he plans his future on a prosperous farm, the wild in Carver still calls to him. Will he embrace his tumbleweed ways, or can the steadfast affection of a schoolteacher convince this roving cowboy to finally hang up his hat?

Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1840s is becoming a cultural and scientific mecca—the city boasts the first art academy and the most lucrative cultural environment for artists in the Midwest. This fact fits perfectly with the dreams and aspirations of young Laura Logan who wants nothing more than to draw, sketch, paint, and to appreciate fine art.Her dreams are not appreciated, nor encouraged by her family, most especially by her hard-working, rather stoic German mother, nor by her younger brother who is a relentless tease. Laura is repeatedly told that her art is a frivolous waste of time. She finds she cannot just turn off these strong passions, nor yet is she strong enough to defend her beliefs.Laura’s artistic, sensitive nature seems to work against her in daily situations, causing her to shrink back in fear. Even in circumstances which call for her to take a firm stance, and to make her voice heard. It takes a series of distressing events for Laura to learn to embrace her artistic nature, and still conquer her many fears.

"Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc" by Mark Twain is a powerful and deeply respectful historical novel that reveals a lesser-known side of one of America's greatest humorists. Considered by Twain himself to be his finest work, this book presents a moving and intimate portrayal of Joan of Arc, the young French heroine whose faith, courage, and leadership changed the course of history.

Told through the fictional memoir of Sieur Louis de Conte, Joan's childhood friend and page, the narrative follows Joan's life from her humble beginnings in the village of Domrémy to her rise as a divinely inspired military leader during the Hundred Years' War. Through this personal perspective, Twain humanizes Joan, portraying her not as a distant legend but as a compassionate, intelligent, and fearless young woman driven by an unshakable sense of purpose.

With meticulous historical research and vivid storytelling, Twain recreates medieval France in rich detail—its political intrigue, religious fervor, brutal warfare, and social divisions. The novel captures both the triumphs and tragedies of Joan's mission, culminating in her trial and martyrdom, moments rendered with emotional depth and quiet reverence.

Unlike Twain's more satirical works, Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc is sincere and restrained, reflecting his profound admiration for its subject. Themes of faith, justice, sacrifice, and moral courage run throughout the book, offering readers a timeless meditation on leadership and integrity in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Both a compelling historical narrative and a heartfelt tribute, Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc stands as a unique and enduring work in Mark Twain's body of writing. It is an essential read for lovers of historical fiction, classic literature, and inspiring stories of courage and conviction.

One of the two Historical novels Charles Dickens wrote, Barnaby Rudge is set around the ‘Gordon’ riots in London in 1780. The story begins in 1775 with Barnaby, his Mother, and his talking Raven Grip, fleeing their home from a blackmailer, and going into hiding. Joe Willet similarly finds he must leave his home to escape his Father’s ire, leaving behind the woman he loves. Five years later these characters, and many others whose lives we have followed, find themselves caught up in the horrific Protestant rioting led by Sir George Gordon. The mob which reaches 100,000 strong, gets out of hand, and there is danger to all in the path of their destruction. Charles Dickens skillfully weaves the lives of his many loving and many wicked characters through the rioting, and shows how this uprising changes so many lives. As a side note, Edgar Allan Poe is said to have been inspired by Barnaby’s raven Grip when he wrote his famous poem,”The Raven”.(Summary by Mil Nicholson)
