Summary

What if the world could be remade without its flaws?
In A Modern Utopia, H. G. Wells invites readers on an extraordinary intellectual adventure to a parallel Earth—one that has been reshaped into a rational, equitable, and harmonious society. Guided by two travelers who find themselves in this alternative world, we witness a society governed by a highly educated elite, the Samurai, who uphold the principles of progress, fairness, and reason.

First published in 1905, this novel blends imaginative storytelling with bold social theory, offering both a critique of existing political systems and a visionary blueprint for a better future. With its fascinating mix of philosophy, travel narrative, and speculative world-building, A Modern Utopia remains one of Wells' most thought-provoking works.

"Wells' bold vision challenges us to rethink the possibilities for humanity."
– The Guardian

"A fascinating fusion of fiction and political philosophy."

Anticipating climate fiction and the new weird literary genre, while garnering fans from Doris Lessing and J. G. Ballard to China Miéville and Patti Smith since it was first published in 1967, this fantasia about predatory male sexual behavior during an apocalyptic climate catastrophe reads as though author Anna Kavan had seen the future.

Ice is slowly covering the entire globe; as the glacial tide creeps forward, the fabric of society begins to break down. Through this chaotic landscape, a nameless narrator hunts for the white-haired girl he once loved—or perhaps wishes to annihilate. Battling a powerful enemy known only as the Warden, he travels through nightmarish and ever-shifting scenes, where the object of his obsession remains constantly just out of reach. She is guarded by the Warden and by a cruel older woman who wishes her ill—but each time the narrator seems poised to rescue her the encroaching ice wreaks violence on her fragile body, or his own base nature sends him hurtling onward in his kaleidoscopic pursuit. Again and again the girl appears, but inevitably she eludes him.

This dystopian classic, the last book Anna Kavan published in her lifetime, renders her apocalyptic vision of environmental devastation and possessive violence in unforgettable, propulsive, oneiric prose.

The Shadow and the Flash by Jack London - Can the moving out of line of even the smallest atom of the Inscrutable pattern of the Universe, bring down the whole great edifice in instantaneous, crashing holocaust?
John Griffith Chaney, famously known as Jack London, was born in 1876. He was among the first American writers to achieve international fame and financial success through his work. At the age of 21, in 1897, London embarked on a journey to the Klondike during the Gold Rush, an experience that inspired some of his earliest and most successful stories.
In 1899, Jack London was living in poverty, desperately submitting stories in the hope of earning one cent per word, the standard rate for fiction he had read about. When he finally sold a 4,000-word story, he was dismayed to receive only $5.00 for it. Reflecting on this moment, London later wrote, “I was finished—finished as only a very young, very sick, and very hungry young man could be … I would never write again.”
However, that same day, he received a letter from the publisher of The Black Cat, responding to his submission of A Thousand Deaths. The publisher requested permission to cut the story in half and offered $40 if London agreed. London recalled, “It was the equivalent to twenty dollars per thousand, or double the minimum rate. And that is just precisely how and why I stayed by the writing game. Literally, and literarily, I was saved by The Black Cat short story.”

But Ibli cannot face this danger alone. Along his path, he is joined by a band of unlikely heroes—each from a different land, each carrying their own burdens and hopes—who will stand with him in the face of chaos. Together, they navigate sulfurous clouds, deadly currents, and corrupt guardians, forging bonds of trust and courage amidst the flames.
This epic adventure weaves mythic battles with profound themes of sacrifice, unity, and faith.
