Summary

A young man pursues Yvette, the beautiful daughter of a Marquise whose salon is not quite what it appears — and discovers, slightly before she does, exactly what her mother is and what that makes her. Flaubert was Maupassant's mother's friend and made him rewrite for seven years before allowing him to publish; this long story is his cruellest about innocence, and the cruelty is in the reader's foreknowledge.

Two writers, one who can produce what sells and one who cannot, and the woman who married the second on the strength of his reviews. Gissing lost a brilliant academic career at eighteen for stealing to keep a prostitute he later married, and knew the reading room, the pawnshop and the three-volume deadline from the inside. The literary life has not had a more truthful account.

"Northanger Abbey" is a satirical novel that tells the story of Catherine Morland, a young, naïve girl who is taken to Bath by family friends for a season of socializing and romance. Catherine is a great reader of gothic novels, which often lead her to imagine plots and intrigues where there are none. At Bath, Catherine meets the charming Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, who introduce her to their family estate, Northanger Abbey. Catherine becomes infatuated with Henry and begins to imagine that his family is hiding secrets and mysteries, much like the gothic novels she loves to read. She begins to explore the Abbey with this in mind, but her fantasies soon come crashing down when she discovers that there is no hidden intrigue at Northanger Abbey. Read in English, unabridged.

Briar Rose is the original Grimm telling of what later generations would soften into Sleeping Beauty—a fairy tale not of romance, but of fate, time, and enchantment that cannot be undone.
When a long-awaited princess is born, she is blessed by twelve fairies with every good gift imaginable. But an uninvited thirteenth fairy delivers a curse: on her fifteenth birthday, the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and fall dead. The spell is weakened, not broken—death becomes a hundred-year sleep, and an entire kingdom is drawn into stillness with her.
What follows is not a tale of rescue, but of suspension. Fires go cold mid-flame. Courtiers freeze in motion. Vines and thorns rise year after year, sealing the palace away from the world. Princes come and perish. Time itself seems to wait.
Only when the century has fully passed does the story allow movement again—awakening not just a sleeping girl, but a world held captive by inevitability.
Narrated with quiet gravity by Joanna Agee, this production restores Briar Rose to its original tone: somber, enchanted, and faintly dangerous. This is the Grimm fairy tale as it was first told—beautiful, unsettling, and bound by fate.

"The Painted Veil" is a literary gem by W. Somerset Maugham, first published in 1925 and later adapted into a successful film. The novel is set against the backdrop of British colonialism in 1920s China and revolves around the complex life of Kitty Fane. She is a young woman who, driven by societal expectations and her own restless spirit, marries Walter, a bacteriologist. However, her marriage quickly becomes a source of unhappiness, and she seeks solace in an extramarital affair.

The discovery of Kitty's infidelity by Walter leads to a pivotal turning point in the narrative. Walter, a man of principle, decides to take his wife with him to a remote village in China, where he works to combat a cholera epidemic. It's a form of punishment for Kitty, who must now confront the consequences of her choices and the harsh realities of a foreign and isolated environment. As the couple grapples with their strained relationship and the challenges of the epidemic, Kitty undergoes a profound transformation. She evolves from a self-absorbed and shallow young woman into someone who discovers the depths of her own character and the true meaning of love and sacrifice.

"The Painted Veil" is a poignant exploration of themes such as love, redemption, and personal growth amidst adversity. It delves into the complexities of human relationships, the consequences of one's actions, and the potential for redemption and self-discovery. Maugham's narrative is richly layered, his characters are beautifully developed, and the novel masterfully captures the emotional struggles and evolution of the central characters. Ultimately, "The Painted Veil" is a timeless work that continues to resonate with readers, inviting them to contemplate the intricate nuances of human nature and the transformative power of love and self-reflection.
