Pevear and Volokhonsky may be the premier Russian-to-English translators of the era. (The New Yorker)

Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky’s masterful translation of The Idiot is destined to stand with their versions of Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and Demons as the definitive Dostoevsky in English.

After his great portrayal of a guilty man in Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky set out in The Idiot to portray a man of pure innocence. The 26-year-old Prince Myshkin, following a stay of several years in a Swiss sanatorium, returns to Russia to collect an inheritance and “be among people”. Even before he reaches home, he meets the dark Rogozhin, a rich merchant’s son whose obsession with the beautiful Nastasya Filippovna eventually draws all three of them into a tragic denouement.

In Petersburg, the prince finds himself a stranger in a society obsessed with money, power, and manipulation. Scandal escalates to murder as Dostoevsky traces the surprising effect of this “positively beautiful man” on the people around him, leading to a final scene that is one of the most powerful in all of world literature.

This audio edition of The Idiot, masterfully narrated by Alan Turton, is the only recording of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of Dostoevsky’s classic work. It was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont with engineering by Raconteurs Audio LLP.

One of HP Lovecrafts earliest works, "The Shunned House", first published in Weird Tales in the October of 1937, is a short novellette about a mysterious, and apparently cursed house. The Shunned House on Benefit Street has long captivated the attention of the narrator and his uncle Elihu Whipple, but they are unprepared for the full scale of the horror they are to experience when they attempt to stay the night in it's benighted basement to finally unearth it's mysterious secrets. Considered one of Lovecrafts best short stories, it is beleived to have been his first individually published book: with 250 copies made by Recluse Press in 1928.
    Narrated by Michael Ward.

'Their motto must be "Whiter and whiter every generation," until the grandchildren of the blue veins could easily go over into the white race and become assimilated so that problems of race would plague them no more.'

A masterful coming-of-age tale, The Blacker the Berry remains one of the most poignant novels borne from the Harlem Renaissance.

Emma Lou Morgan, a young African–American woman with dark skin, struggles to fit in. Her mother's family, all light-skinned from European ancestry, attempt to alter Emma's dark features with bleach and various creams – but nothing holds. Unaccepted by those closest to her, Emma flees her small town in favour of Los Angeles and Harlem, where people have better things to think about than her skin. But, as Emma soon learns, prejudice is a pernicious force, one which can even infiltrate those belonging to her own race. A profound insight into the consequences of colourism during the early twentieth century, The Blacker the Berry is a deeply moving account of one woman's search for belonging.
Wallace Thurman (1902 – 1934) was an American screenwriter, novelist and essayist. A renowned figure in literary circles during the Harlem Renaissance, Thurman worked as an editor, ghostwriter and publisher during his lifetime, working with the likes of Zora Neale Hurston, Aaron Douglas and Gwendolyn B. Bennett. He died tragically young at thirty-two, after contracting tuberculosis.

Fiercely observed, often hilarious, and "reminiscent of Ibsen and Strindberg" (The New York Times Book Review), this exquisitely controversial novel was initially banned in its author's homeland.

A searing portrayal of Vienna's bourgeoisie, it begins with the arrival of an unnamed writer at an 'artistic dinner' hosted by a composer and his society wife—a couple he once admired and has come to loathe. The guest of honor, a distinguished actor from the Burgtheater, is late. As the other guests wait impatiently, they are seen through the critical eye of the writer, who narrates a silent but frenzied tirade against these former friends, most of whom have been brought together by Joana, a woman they buried earlier that day. Reflections on Joana's life and suicide are mixed with these denunciations until the famous actor arrives, bringing an explosive end to the evening that even the writer could not have seen coming.
