Sinopse

Guy de Maupassant - The Complete Works is an extensive compilation that captures the brilliance of one of the most revered French writers of the 19th century. This anthology features a rich tapestry of Maupassant's short stories, novels, plays, poems, and memoirs, illustrating his signature realism and keen psychological insight. His incisive narratives often explore themes of human frailty, societal constraints, and existential dread, rendered in a succinct, yet evocative style that is profoundly relatable. Through vivid characterizations and masterful dialogue, Maupassant exposes the complexities of life, making his works timeless reflections on the human condition. Guy de Maupassant, born in 1850, was influenced by his experiences in war and the changing socio-political landscape of France post the Franco-Prussian War. A protégé of Gustave Flaubert, Maupassant was a pioneer in the short story form, and his works often mirrored the tumultuous nature of his private life, including struggles with mental health and familial relationships. His literary output became a vital commentary on the shifting tides of modernity and the intricacies of human emotions. This comprehensive collection is highly recommended for readers seeking to immerse themselves in the depth of Maupassant's literary genius. Whether you are a long-time admirer or new to his oeuvre, this compilation serves as an essential resource that enhances appreciation for his nuanced storytelling and reflects the complexities of the human experience.

The Five Orange Pips, one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by the British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the fifth of the 12 stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1891.
John Openshaw tells Holmes about two strange deaths in his family. In 1883, his uncle died two months after receiving a letter from India, inscribed "KKK", with five orange pips enclosed. In 1885, Openshaw's father received a similar letter and died three days afterward. Openshaw recently received a similar letter and asks for advice.
Holmes tells Openshaw to do as the letter asks and leave a diary page, which Holmes deduces is connected to the Ku Klux Klan, on the garden sundial. Openshaw is killed before he can do so, but Holmes discovers the killers have been travelling on a sailing ship and sends a letter with five orange pips. The ship is lost at sea.

A collection of 18 pieces of writing, Shoes and Stockings by Louisa May Alcott comes with stories about war, love and other important topics, making readers laugh at times, bringing them to tears at other times, and always getting them to contemplate. Louisa May Alcott was one of the most prolific American writers of the 19th century. She wrote novels and poems, and she published her letters written to her family while she was recovering from typhoid after she had started work as a nurse during the Civil War.She also wrote critical articles about hospital management and about the problems she encountered while she was working as a nurse, but what made her name widely known was her short stories. Many of the female characters in the Shoes and Stockings stories are in fact figures inspired by the author's own life. Alcott's work was largely influenced by her education and her path in life – in her youth, she received education not only from her father, but also from Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson and other influential figures of the age who were all family friends of the Alcotts. Louisa May had to start earning her own money at a very young age – she worked as a seamstress, a governess and a teacher, too, experiences that appear in her writing as well. She was also an abolitionist, one of the first feminist writers of her times and a supporter of women's suffrage. She never married and never had children, but she knew and loved children – affection she expressed in her numerous children's stories. This collection contains stories written for adults, young and old alike, and it includes two of Alcott's most popular pieces, a light-hearted story entitled Kitty's Class Day and Aunt Kipp, another masterfully written story about family and money (or rather, the lack of it).

His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.
BOOK THE SECOND: BIRDS OF A FEATHER: The school at which young Charley Hexam had first learned from a book the streets being, for pupils of his degree, the great Preparatory Establishment in which very much that is never unlearned is learned without and before book was a miserable loft in an unsavoury yard. Its atmosphere was oppressive and disagreeable; it was crowded, noisy, and confusing; half the pupils dropped asleep, or fell into a state of waking stupefaction; the other half kept them in either condition by maintaining a monotonous droning noise, as if they were performing, out of time and tune, on a ruder sort of bagpipe.

The children, Sun and Moon, are hanging around the house while a party is being prepared. They play games, then are sent off to bed. The party wakes them up; their parents find them out of their beds and instead of scolding them, they let them go downstairs for a bite - but Sun starts sobbing because Moon has eaten the nut from the centerpiece (the moment of ruined perfection, a recurring theme in Mansfield's work), and they are sent off to bed again.

Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is an 1818 Gothic novel written by English author Mary Shelley. Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was 18, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on 1 January 1818, when she was 20. Her name first appeared in the second edition, which was published in Paris in 1821.Shelley travelled through Europe in 1815, moving along the river Rhine in Germany, and stopping in Gernsheim, 17 kilometres (11 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where, about a century earlier, Johann Konrad Dippel, an alchemist, had engaged in experiments. She then journeyed to the region of Geneva, Switzerland, where much of the story takes place. Galvanism and occult ideas were topics of conversation for her companions, particularly for her lover and future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley.
