Summary

In "Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland," the narrative intricately weaves the personal and public life of Alice, a member of the British royal family who married into German nobility. The book adopts a reflective literary style, punctuated by vivid illustrations and direct quotations from historical letters, capturing Alice's experiences as she navigates the complexities of royal duties, family relationships, and her philanthropic endeavors. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century European aristocracy, it offers insights into the socio-political context of the time, particularly the tensions between Germany and Britain. Alice, born to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, was profoundly influenced by her parents' commitment to duty and social reform. Her upbringing in a politically charged environment, coupled with her compassionate disposition, inspired her life's work advocating for education and healthcare, particularly for the less privileged. The trials of family life, including the loss of her son to hemophilia, also deeply shaped her character, reflecting the emotional challenges faced by women in her position. This book is highly recommended for scholars, history enthusiasts, and those interested in royal studies. It not only sheds light on Alice's life but also enriches our understanding of the intersection between royalty and social reform, making it a compelling read for anyone wishing to explore the intimate historical narratives of the time.

By the turn of the 20th century, American entertainment was still preoccupied with European-style operetta, as embodied in the works of cellist-composer Victor Herbert. Traditional dance forms moved from European stories to the American prairie in Oklahoma by the late 1940s, and what was once the property of Bavarian princes became the singing standards of cowboys riding through the corn fields in Oh What a Beautiful Morning and Out of My Dreams. At the time, the availability of classical ballet in America was scant. In contrast to the evolution of an American style in musical theater, Broadway, and film, ballet in the United States was ushered in largely through the efforts of an individual who brought with him a strong traditional sense from Russia and the rest of Europe but was intent on producing a distinctly American style. Other experimentalists appeared, such as Isadora Duncan, but it was George Balanchine who managed to institutionalize and fund both a hybrid traditional as well as experimental form.
In the 1960s, Bob Fosse emerged as one of the leading dancers, actors, choreographers, directors, screenwriters and film directors on Broadway and in Hollywood. He became famous for conquering several fields on the musical stage and film simultaneously in a way that no one has before or since. It is said that “only Busby Berkeley compares” to Fosse despite the fact that Berkeley was never a dancer, and that Fosse enjoyed eight Broadway hits to Berkeley’s one. Fosse forever changed the way the modern audience viewed dance on stage and film. Coupling his rise with the sexual freedom movement, he is known for an “intense, unbelievably driven, provocative, entertaining…sexual, physically demanding” choreographic style. Difficult for even the best dancers, the range of expression encompasses “joyous humor, as well as bleak cynicism.”

Phillimon Zongo got his first pair of shoes at 12 and moved out to rent at 14. His dilapidated room had no electricity, no running water, no windows, and had a makeshift unlockable door. Two of the township’s toughest prostitutes occupied the two adjoining rooms. Most Friday nights, he ran back home, 23 kilometres away, and ran back to school on Monday mornings.
In 1994, on the cusp of dropping out of school because he could not afford the fees, a benevolent German took a bet on him. She gave him one of life’s greatest gifts – a chance to pursue his boundless potential. Despite countless obstacles, Zongo never entertained self-pity. He topped his class and became the first to graduate from university in his family.
Zongo migrated to Australia in 2007, armed with $300 and boundless ambition. But the deeply rooted belief that his odds to succeed in Australia as a young African were wafer-thin proved all too-crushing. In 2011, he sold everything and returned to Zimbabwe.
But a strange twist of fate forced Zongo to return to Australia in 2012. A mindset shift ignited a whirlwind run of success. Zongo published a bestselling book, won multiple global awards, co-founded the Cyber Leadership Institute, and keynoted events alongside the former Head of FBI cyber-crime division.
This poignant, hilarious and impeccably written memoir – spanning Savannah grasslands, Harare ghettos, Australia and beyond – proves the remarkable power of education and grit to defeat poverty and despair.
