Summary

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was a German mathematician, philosopher, scientist and diplomat who invented calculus in addition to many other branches of mathematics and statistics. He has been called the "last universal genius" due to his knowledge and skills in different fields and because such people became less common during the Industrial Revolution and spread of specialized labor after his lifetime.
As a philosopher, Leibniz was a leading representative of 17th-century rationalism and idealism. Leibniz's philosophical thinking appears fragmented because his philosophical writings consist mainly of a multitude of short pieces: journal articles, manuscripts published long after his death, and letters to correspondents.
We propose to our readers today A Philosopher's Creed (Confessio Philosophi, 1673), a philosophical dialogue that represent Leibniz’s early thoughts on the problem of evil, in which he formulates a general account of God’s relation to sin and evil that becomes a fixture in his thinking.

The South African Famine of 1820...

In the early 19th century, South Africa was a land marked by contrasts—fertile valleys and arid plains, indigenous traditions and growing colonial ambition. The region most affected by the famine of 1820 was the Cape Colony, which had come under British control in 1806. This colony served as a strategic resupply point for British ships sailing to and from the East Indies, and it was gradually becoming a hub for European settlement, particularly by the Dutch-descended Boers and British immigrants arriving as part of state-sponsored schemes. These settlers introduced European agricultural practices, often ill-suited to the diverse and unpredictable South African climate.
The colony’s geography played a significant role in shaping life and livelihoods. Coastal areas received more rainfall and were relatively fertile, while the interior—known as the Karoo and other semi-arid zones—was prone to drought and soil erosion. Farming communities depended heavily on seasonal rainfall to sustain crops such as wheat, maize, and barley, as well as livestock including sheep and cattle. When these rains failed, communities faced immediate and severe consequences, especially in regions where irrigation infrastructure was minimal or nonexistent.
The social landscape of the Cape was equally complex. Indigenous groups such as the Xhosa, Khoikhoi, and San had long adapted to the challenges of the land through mixed economies of herding, gathering, and small-scale farming. Their interaction with European settlers was often strained, marked by competition over land and water sources, cultural misunderstandings, and colonial policies that marginalized local traditions and governance structures.

Social justice has always remained a preoccupation and concern, and even a passion, in the very mental make-up of the Tamil people. The history of Tamil down the ages shows that the socially oppressed and their rights to religious observances have always been upheld. The Tamils were therefore particularly impressed by the principles of Karl Marx. While upholding economic justice, the Tamils also asserted social justice. The emphasis of social justice shifted from a demand for religious rights to a demand for the right to education and social equality. At the same time the European Rationality also influenced the Tamil stock. So it was like a confluence of new sentiments, ideas, rationality and agnosticism that led to institutionalized ideological movements during the 19th and 20th centuries that characterized the tenor of the Tamil thought stream, politics, religion, social structure, empowerment and a revaluation of the traditional. Such institutionalization was best realized by the Dravidian Movement led by EV Ramasamy Naicker, reverently called Periyar. Periyar lived a long life and through and through he had been vociferous and influential. His writings and speeches run to thousands of pages. A few selected speeches and articles, which however are too little to represent the multifarious issues that Periyar addressed, have been presented in this audio book. The selection eliminates a couple of issues because certain causes that made Periyar address those issues no more exist in the Tamil society of the 20th and 21st centuries. The selected speeches and articles are from his corpus on the following issues.
    1.       திராவிடநாடு 2. கலைகள் 3. பொருளாதாரம் 4. சமுதாயம் 5. தத்துவம் 6. கிராம சீர்திருத்தம் 7. கல்வி 8. பகுத்தறிவு 9. தேசியம், இயக்கங்கள்
