ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
In Han Kang’s novel, “The Vegetarian,” Yeong-hye’s sudden decision to stop eating meat sets off a chain reaction of disturbing events. Her choice, rooted in unsettling dreams, is met with bewilderment and anger from her family who try to force her back to their way of life. As Yeong-hye’s mental state deteriorates, her brother-in-law, an artist, becomes obsessed with her and her Mongolian mark, using her as a muse for his disturbing art. The novel explores themes of repression, desire, identity, and the fragility of the human psyche within a restrictive society, leaving the reader to ponder the boundaries between sanity and madness.
