Summary

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: G. K. Chesterton, the man beyond the writer

First published in 1905, “Heretics” is a collection of 20 essays and articles by English writer and philosopher G. K. Chesterton.

Focusing on "heretics" — those who pride themselves on their superiority to Christian views — Chesterton appraises prominent figures who fall into that category from the literary and art worlds. Luminaries such as Rudyard Kipling, George Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and James McNeill Whistler come under the author's scrutiny, where they meet with equal measures of his characteristic wisdom and good humour.

In addition to incisive assessments of well-known individuals, these essays contain observations on the wider world. While the loci of the chapters of “Heretics” are personalities, the topics he debates are as universal to the "vague moderns" of the 21st century as they were to those of the 20th. The topics he touches upon range from cosmology to anthropology to soteriology and he argues against French nihilism, German humanism, English utilitarianism, the syncretism of "the vague modern", Social Darwinism, eugenics and the arrogance and misanthropy of the European intelligentsia.

“Heretics” roused the ire of some critics for censuring contemporary philosophies without providing alternatives; the author responded a few years later with a companion volume, “Orthodoxy.” Both works are regarded as central to his corpus of moral theology.

This book is not a memoir in the usual sense. It is a dissection.
I describe a life that moves along the extremes of modern existence. From the son of a working-class family to a millionaire, from building a multimillion-dollar company to its collapse through sophisticated fraud. From tables in luxury restaurants to the food bank. From a rule-of-law system that calls itself “justice” yet sometimes produces the opposite, to an actual attempted murder by criminals. From medical failures that even Kafka would consider absurd to a late diagnosis of “high-functioning autism”, a term that sounds like a compliment but in practice feels more like a software system that never reaches a stable state.
This book is a search for logic in a world that often betrays it.
Not a comforting story, but an intellectual confrontation for those willing to look beyond the surface.
The book moves from cognitive foundations, through institutional failure and physical and psychological disruption, toward an analytical testimony that records what systems themselves cannot or will not remember.

This riveting book is an astonishing testimony of what befell two sisters, Whitehouse’s own mother-in-law and aunt, who managed to escape the killing fields in Vichy France against all odds.

Marion and Huguette Müller’s family was torn apart when the Nazis invaded France in 1940. After their mother was deported to Auschwitz, the sisters fled to the small Alpine ski resort village of Val d'Isère, where they were rescued by a brave young doctor.

Through intrepid reporting and meticulous research, Whitehouse traces the story of the Müller sisters, solving decades-old mysteries in her attempt to deliver both closure and justice. With skill and urgency, Whitehouse raises moral questions at the heart of the tragedy of the Shoah: questions about complicity, culpability, about duty to your country and your fellow man. She sifts through thousands of records and pieces together how the sisters were saved, and how so many others were lost.

It is a tale full of shocking discoveries featuring a bloodthirsty killer, secret operatives of the French resistance, forged documents, narrow escapes, and miracles.
