Summary

Villani's Chronicle, written by the Florentine historian Giovanni Villani in the early 14th century, is a monumental work that chronicles the social, political, and economic history of Florence and Italy during a transformative era. Villani employs a clear yet engaging prose style, infused with a sense of urgency and vivid detail, making this chronicle not only a historical document but also a literary piece rich in narrative depth. Among the notable features of this work are its meticulous first-hand observations, reflections on governance, and elucidations of civic life that situate the reader firmly within the tumultuous times leading up to the Renaissance. Giovanni Villani, a prominent merchant and public official, was deeply invested in the fate of Florence, which significantly influenced his perspective as a chronicler. Known for his analytical approach and dedication to civic duty, his firsthand experiences provided him with a unique insight into the economic factors at play and the civic identity of his city. The Chronicle is thereby shaped by Villani's merchant background and his passion for the communal values that defined Florence, offering readers a window into the medieval world. For those interested in the intricate tapestry of medieval history, especially the rise of the Italian city-states, Villani's Chronicle offers invaluable perspectives and a captivating narrative. This essential text not only serves as a historical record but also enriches our understanding of the societal changes that laid the groundwork for the Renaissance. Readers seeking a profound grasp of Florence's legacy will find this chronicle a compelling and illuminating journey.

Padraig O'Malley's Perils and Prospects of a United Ireland presents a wide-ranging and unique study of the questions around the future of Northern Irish politics, including the idea of reunification.
O'Malley has forged relationships across the political divide for over half a century and here he attemps to ascertain whether, after decades of interaction – but especially since the B/GFA – the protagonists are any closer to working co-operatively
In this book, O'Malley explores the factors that might lead to the Northern Ireland Secretary of State calling a border referendum and the challenges both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would face. How might that majority for unity, a simple 50 per cent + 1, emerge? What criteria might a Secretary of State draw on to make their judgment call?
Including interviews from ninety-seven political players, academics, political influencers, a cross-section of the political grandees who negotiated the B/GFA and faith leaders between February 2020 and June 2021, O'Malley takes a temperature check of opinions from Northern Ireland with a sampling of opinion in the South.
Interviewees included party leaders Jeffrey Donaldson (Democratic Unionist Party, DUP), Doug Beattie (Ulster Unionist Party, UUP), Naomi Long (Alliance), Colum Eastwood (Social Democratic and Labour Party, SDLP) and Billy Hutchinson (Progressive Unionist Party, PUP), and members of the Ard Comhairle, Matt Carty TD and Chris Hazzard MP.
Focusing on the topics of the Northern Ireland Protocol, the Good Friday Agreement, Brexit, Unionism, Nationalism, the economics of potential reunification or continued partition, and the broad range of Northern Irish identities, this work encompasses the most up-to-date and considered review of political actions so far. A must-read for those interested in the future of Northern Ireland.
Perils and Prospects of a United Ireland will be published ahead of a major international conference to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement being hosted by Queen's University Belfast on April 17th and 18th 2023.
PRAISE FOR PERILS AND PROSPECTS OF A UNITED IRELAND

'Few subjects are as vexing and uncertain as the long-term consequences of Brexit and the possibility of a united Ireland, yet Padraig O'Malley has drawn on his decades studying divided societies to produce a clear-eyed, wide-ranging, nonpartisan, elegantly written, up-to-the-minute analysis. Perils and Prospects is an important book – and an urgent one.' Patrick Radden Keefe
'Padraig O'Malley's new book is a profoundly important exploration of the complexities and conundrums of untying the Gordian knot of Irish partition. I have not seen this depth of non-partisan understanding and explanation from any other analyst or advocate. That is why anyone who wants – or needs – to understand the possible endgame of Irish partition has to get this well-written book and read it carefully.' Professor, the Lord Alderdice: First Speaker, Northern Ireland Assembly (1998-2004)

'I love this book' Fern Britton
'Laugh out loud funny' Kate Bottley
An explosive satire of gender stereotypes that flips patriarchy on its head to highlight sexist double standards.
Exploring subjects like work and comedy, history and sport, the beauty industry and domesticity, anonymous author Man Who Has It All imagines a world in which men are bombarded with the same stereotypical bullshit as women. What if men's T-shirts were emblazoned with slogans encouraging them to be smiley, positive and kind? What if we laughed at jokes about fathers-in-law, male drivers and middle-class men of a certain age? What if men's history was a niche topic? Behind the jokes about crazy cat gentlemen, testerical men and the twenty-four-hour moustache, lies a deeper, darker message about language, power and control.
Smart and provocative, Man Who Has It All shines a powerful light on the prejudice ingrained in our society. Told through fictionalised scenarios and wider cultural analysis, this is a feminist handbook that will arm you against the patriarchy.

Homegrown Radicals - A Story of...

In 2007, three Muslim university students left the Canadian Prairies, seemingly without a trace. In the ensuing months, their disappearance raised fears that the men had become "radicalized," posing a grave threat to national security. From presidential briefings and targeted drone assassinations to a politically charged trial, the men's story sheds new light not only on the figure of the "radical," but also on the "moderate" Muslim, represented by a community forever changed by the men's departure.

Homegrown Radicals offers a case study of the complex entanglements of the radical and moderate Muslim in post-9/11 North America. Youcef Soufi brings these figures together, providing insight into how state violence has inextricably tied them together. Focusing on the radicalization of the three students, the book traces the general sense of affective injury among North American Muslims over the loss of Muslim life in Western military campaigns overseas. In this context, a new theory of jihad rooted in a Muslim utopian imagination emerged, marking a significant rupture with premodern Islamic thought. The three "radicals" were among thousands of Anglophone Muslims who found this new theory compelling as both a diagnosis and a solution to the violence unleashed in the War on Terror. The book examines how and why this theory resonated, as well as its consequences.
