Summary

"Fine Art Collecting" offers a comprehensive guide to navigating the art world, uniquely blending artistic appreciation with financial strategies. It addresses the dual nature of fine art as both a cultural artifact and a tangible asset, providing readers with the tools to build a collection that's personally rewarding and financially sound.

The book highlights the importance of understanding art market mechanisms, such as auctions and galleries, while also demystifying valuation techniques and portfolio diversification. A key insight is that successful art collecting requires a synergy between artistic knowledge and financial acumen.

The book progresses systematically, beginning with fundamental art concepts and market dynamics. It then delves into the financial aspects of art investment, covering valuation, risk management, and tax implications. Finally, it provides practical strategies for building a collection based on specific investment goals. Readers will learn how to identify undervalued assets, develop relationships with art professionals, and navigate legal and ethical considerations. It emphasizes the necessity of due diligence and informed decision-making in the often-speculative art market.

    Thomas Henry Lyon - Architect...

Thomas Henry Lyon (1869–1953) was an important architect whose work has often been ignored, because he did not take up the Modernist ideas of many of his contemporaries. His work was also almost entirely concentrated in either Cambridge or the edge of Dartmoor. His contribution to the inter-War development of the Colleges of Cambridge was immense and often overlooked: this book seeks to restore his reputation.

The book restores to public consciousness the extensive architectural work carried out by Lyon, particularly in Cambridge, and does not gloss over the disaster of a church in Wembley which had to be closed after less than 30 years. It also looks at the important work he carried out in South Australia in the pre-1914 age, as well as his masterly reconstruction and furnishing of Sidney Sussex College chapel, which established his reputation. It has been extensively researched in archives across England, but particularly in those of the Colleges of Cambridge.

This program is read by the author.“This is a great audiobook for nature lovers, carpenters, and people who dream of their hobby becoming their day job.”—AudioFileA memoir of the author's journey from an office job to restoring a cabin in the Pacific Northwest, based on his wildly popular Outside Magazine piece.Wit’s End isn’t just a state of mind. It’s the name of a gravel road, the address of a rundown, off-the-grid cabin, 120 shabby square feet of fixer-upper Patrick Hutchison purchased on a whim in the mossy woods of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. To say Hutchison didn’t know what he was getting into is no more an exaggeration than to say he’s a man with nearly zero carpentry skills. Well, used to be. You can learn a lot over six years of renovations. CABIN is the story of those renovations, but it's also a love story; of a place, of possibilities, and of the process of construction, of seeing what could be instead of what is. It is an audiobook for those who know what it’s like to bite off more than you can chew, or who desperately wish to.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

  • Manifesto for the Revitalisation of Cities - A Solution to Portugal's Housing Crisis - cover

    Manifesto for the Revitalisation...

The housing crisis in Portugal serves to illustrate a problem that has implications beyond the borders of the country, shedding light on challenges that are faced by major European and global cities. The rise in housing prices, driven by real estate speculation, the growth of tourism and the influx of foreign investment, has made it increasingly challenging for many in the population, especially the middle and lower classes, to access home ownership or renting.
The digitalisation of work has opened the possibility for highly qualified professionals to consider where they would like to live, regardless of the physical location of their job. Cities like Lisbon and Porto have become increasingly attractive destinations, offering a good quality of life combined with a range of professional opportunities. Nevertheless, this phenomenon has placed additional strain on the real estate market, leading to rising prices and the displacement of residents to the outskirts.
The housing policies that have been adopted thus far have not been as effective as might have been hoped, and in some cases may even have had the opposite effect. It seems that measures such as strict rent control, poorly targeted subsidies and the massive construction of new housing without proper urban and infrastructural planning have not solved the problem, and in some cases may have made it worse. Perhaps it would be beneficial to reconsider these approaches, acknowledging their shortcomings and adapting them to reflect the current situation.
It may be worth considering rehabilitating vacant buildings as a viable and sustainable solution. By restoring existing buildings, we can explore ways to increase the supply of affordable housing, revitalise run-down urban areas and preserve historical and cultural heritage to promote more inclusive and sustainable cities.
