Summary

Behind Frida Kahlo’s portraits, lies the story of both her life and work. It is precisely this combination that draws the reader in. Frida’s work is a record of her life, and rarely can we learn so much about an artist from what she records inside the picture frame. Frida Kahlo truly is Mexico’s gift to the history of art. She was just eighteen years old when a terrible bus accident changed her life forever, leaving her handicapped and burdened with constant physical pain. But her explosive character, raw determination and hard work helped to shape her artistic talent. And although he was an obsessive womanizer, the great painter Diego Rivera was by her side. She won him over with her charm, talent and intelligence, and Kahlo learnt to lean on the success of her companion in order to explore the world, thus creating her own legacy whilst finding herself surrounded by a close-knit group of friends. Her personal life was turbulent, as she frequently left her relationship with Diego to one side whilst she cultivated her own bisexual relationships. Despite this, Frida and Diego managed to save their frayed relationship. The story and the paintings that Frida left us display a courageous account of a woman constantly on a search of self discovery.

Notoriously reticent about his early years, violinist Jascha Heifetz famously reduced the story of his childhood to "Born in Russia. First lessons at 3. Debut in Russia at 7. Debut in Carnegie Hall at 17. That's all there is to say." Tracing his little-known upbringing, Jascha Heifetz: Early Years in Russia uncovers the events and experiences that shaped one of the modern era's most unique talents and enigmatic personalities. Using previously unstudied archival materials and interviews with family and friends, this biography explores Heifetz's meteoric rise in the Russian music world—from his first violin lessons with his father, to his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with the well-known pedagogue Leopold Auer, to his tours throughout Russia and Europe. Spotlighting Auer's close-knit circle of musicians, Galina Kopytova underscores the lives of artists in Russia's "Silver Age"—an explosion of artistic activity amid the rapid social and political changes of the early 20th century.

“A before B, except after C” - a favorite saying of Carbon-Based A-life. Biological or ‘B-life’ was overtaken by A-life centuries ago and now the balance of power is at the tipping point.
An invisible rogue planet on a perfect collision course with Earth caught everyone by surprise, even GAIA. With nearly all forty billion humans still living on Earth, this time it really is the end of the world for B-life.
What is to be done? Moving a planet is beyond the combined capabilities of all of Sol System’s resources, and there is no ‘planet B’. Even worse, many class 12 AI’s don’t think B-life deserves to survive - after all, extinction in this universe is the rule, not the exception.
Does humanity deserve to survive? Does Earth? Does deserve have anything to do with it?
There is a woman, Brinn, a scientist who has scoured the entire DNA database for the best biological capabilities, plant and animal alike. These she integrated into her own biome, evolved to the pinnacle of B-life in a single package. She has lived to give B-life a fighting chance in a cruel cosmos. She will determine the nature of the Rogue Era.Track 1 - Brinn – Dr Diaz gives a talk on the future of Human biology. Brad listens in attentively. Track 2 – A World on Hold – An invisible rogue planet on a collision course with Earth catches everyone by surprise. Clearly this is where everything happens.Track 7 - BiAdmiral – They discuss the strange nature of the mysterious BiAdmiral – half AI, half human. Brinn produces evidence for a complex Carbon-based life form.Track 8 – Carbon Snob – The Vice-Admiral is not impressed with their findings. And his tone is worrisome. Surely any contribution should be welcomed with open arms?Track 9 - Them – Deciphering the machines’ language yields frequent references to a third person object, plural, gender unknown. Do the machines work for “them”?Track 10 – Another Actor – The BiAdmiral has dropped nuclear bombs on the planet. All information they share is treated with disdain.Track 11 – The Devil You Know – In his desperation Brad calls on Solefuge for help. Can this powerful AI’s ambitions be aligned with the needs of humanity?Track 12 – A Nose for Them – Brinn designs a sensor-molecule to find ‘them’. She needs the fleet to distribute the sensors, but to their horror the BiAdmiral announces operation ‘Save the Earth’.Track 13 – The Sleepers – In a brilliant flash of insight, Brinn manages to find them. With only a few hours left, she rushes to make contact, but Brad finds it difficult to say goodbye.Track 14 – Panspermia II – Thousands of craters erupt with rock and plasma. And B-life.Track 15 – Brad 2.0 – Brad’s brainstate backup awakes in a new body. Change is the hallmark of the new Rogue Era.

Joel Plaskett has earned an awful lot of honourifics in his career so far, counting folk hero, indie darling, and national treasure among them. And that’s just since the Halifax musician started making records of his own in 1999. For a decade before that, he was one-quarter of Thrush Hermit, a band of scrappy Superchunk mimics who became hard-rock revivalists and one of the last survivors of the ’90s pop “explosion” of major-label interest in Halifax.

Canada’s east coast has never been much of a pop-culture mecca. Most musicians from the region who’ve ever made it big moved away. But armed with a stubborn streak and a knack for great songwriting, Plaskett has kept Halifax as his home, building both a career and a music community there. Along the way, he’s earned great respect: when he plays shows in Alberta, east-coast expats literally thank him for staying home.

Nowhere With You is the study of how he pulled this off, from the origins of Canada’s east-coast exodus to Plaskett’s anointment as “Halifax’s Rick Rubin.” It’s a story about what happens when you call a city “the new Seattle,” about the lessons you learn playing to empty rooms in Oklahoma, and about defying radio-single expectations with rock operas and triple records. It’s about doing what you want, where you want, no matter how much work it takes.
