Summary

In "The Salton Sea: An Account of Harriman's Fight with the Colorado River," George Kennan meticulously chronicles the tumultuous struggle over water rights and environmental stewardship in the early 20th century American West. Through rich narrative prose and detailed analysis, Kennan presents the clash between industrial aspirations and ecological preservation, focusing on E.H. Harriman's vision for the utilization of the Colorado River. This work serves as both a historical account and a reflection on the broader themes of human intervention in nature, all framed within a naturalistic and critical literary style that invites readers to ponder the consequences of unchecked ambition. George Kennan was not only a prominent diplomat and historian but also a keen observer of the socio-political landscapes of his time. His experiences in international relations and his deep appreciation for the complexities of natural systems inspired him to seek out the intricate ties between human endeavors and environmental impact. This background lends a unique perspective to his writing, allowing him to weave together strands of historical narrative with compelling environmental critique. Kennan's "The Salton Sea" is essential reading for historians, environmentalists, and anyone interested in the intricate interplay between man and nature. Its relevance resonates today as we grapple with ongoing water crises and the legacies of our past, making it a vital exploration of water rights, conflict, and conservation that remains acutely relevant.

The story of dark matter begins not in the distant reaches of the universe, but in the questions that humans have asked for centuries. What is the universe made of? Why do galaxies behave the way they do? As our tools for observing the cosmos improved, so did our understanding—but with every answer came more mystery. In the early 20th century, astronomers began to notice strange things. Galaxies were spinning in ways that defied the laws of physics, at least as we understood them. The stars on the outer edges of galaxies were moving far too fast to be held together by the gravity from visible matter alone. There had to be something else out there, something invisible, something we couldn’t detect with telescopes. This was one of the first big hints that something massive and unseen—what we now call dark matter—was shaping the universe.
Modern cosmology was born when scientists started to view the universe not just as a collection of stars and planets, but as a dynamic, evolving structure governed by deep physical laws. Einstein’s theory of general relativity reshaped our understanding of space, time, and gravity. Suddenly, the universe was a place where space could bend, expand, and even accelerate. These ideas led to the Big Bang theory and the realization that the cosmos had a beginning and has been changing ever since. But as astronomers began mapping out galaxies and measuring their movements, inconsistencies popped up. The math didn’t add up unless we assumed that most of the mass in the universe was missing from our view. That mass didn’t emit light, didn’t reflect it, and didn’t absorb it. It was dark, but it was there.

Every system — natural or human — has a breaking point. Ice sheets collapse, forests burn, markets crash, societies fracture. Now, as the planet edges toward a cascade of irreversible shifts, humanity faces its own moment of balance.
In Tipping Points, Alex Southwick examines the fragile thresholds that define our age — from the melting Arctic permafrost to the strain on global food networks and the fraying bonds of political trust. Drawing on science, history, and on-the-ground reporting, Southwick reveals how these crises intertwine, amplifying one another into a single planetary reckoning.
Yet this is also a story of resilience. Across the world, communities, cities, and movements are learning to adapt — not by returning to the old normal, but by building something entirely new.
Sweeping in scope yet intimate in its insight, Tipping Points is a profound exploration of how climate chaos doesn’t just threaten civilization — it’s already redefining what civilization means.

What is a meteor or meteorite? A meteor is a small body of matter apparently from outer space that upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere resembles a streak of light, what we normally call falling stars. A meteorite is one of these that successfully hits the ground and sometimes other things, including people, buildings and animals!
Until 1803 most scientists regarded falls of meteorites as absurd and fantastical. As well as impossible. This was until the massive fall onto L’Aigle in France of thousands of meteorites on April 23rd 1803. Previously on November 11th 1799 there had also been a massive meteor shower comprising thousands of meteors that was seen all over the Earth. This is now known to be the Leonid meteors whose falls have diminished since. The Leonids come around every November, usually near the beginning of the month. Funny how this is a peak period for UFO sightings! That was accepted meteorites. Then you have such things as Black Comets. Black comets are extinct cometary nuclei which no longer create outgassing. No tail is visible. They are black and difficult to see in space unless they are passing celestial bodies. Even these seem apparently normal when you look at everything that has come crashing down, sometimes heavily and sometimes lightly, from the skies. Amongst the true meteorites and possible fragment of black comets, and possibly even antimatter, and even large blocks of ice, what then are the rest of these? That the majority of UFO sightings might actually be misidentified meteoric or cometary bodies. The list of incidents from the sky including numerous near misses. Are they meteors, comets or UFOs or a combination or misinterpretation of all of the above?
