Summary

In 'The Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in Europe' by George Catlin, the reader is immersed in a narrative that blends travelogue, cultural exploration, and ethnographic study. Written in a captivating and detailed style, the book follows the journey of Native American delegations to Europe in the 1840s, offering a unique insight into their encounters with European society and the impact of colonialism. Catlin's vivid descriptions and encounters with various European figures provide a rich tapestry of cultural exchange and colonial critique. His passionate portrayal of Native American cultures challenges prevailing Eurocentric views of the time, making this book a significant contribution to the ethnographic genre. George Catlin, an American painter and traveler, was deeply inspired by the indigenous peoples of North America. His close relationships with Native American tribes fueled his desire to document their way of life and challenge Western perceptions. His experiences traveling with Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians to Europe led to the creation of this groundbreaking book, which reflects his commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous cultures. I highly recommend 'The Adventures of the Ojibbeway and Ioway Indians in Europe' to readers interested in ethnography, Native American history, or colonial studies. Catlin's passionate and detailed account offers a unique perspective on cultural exchange and highlights the resilience of indigenous peoples in the face of colonialism.

The son of a former slave, Pertinax was the Roman Emperor who proved that no matter how lowly your birth, you could rise to the very top through hard work, grit and determination.

Born in AD 126, Pertinax made a late career change from working as a grammar teacher to a position in the army. As he moved up the ranks and further along the aristocratic cursus honorum, he took on many of the most important postings in the Empire, from senior military roles in fractious Britain, the Marcomannic Wars on the Danube, to the Parthian Wars in the east. He held governorships in key provinces, and later consulships in Rome itself. When Emperor Commodus was assassinated, the Praetorian Guard alighted on Pertinax to become the new Emperor, expecting a pliable puppet. But Pertinax was nothing of the sort and when he then attempted to reform the Guard, he was assassinated. His death triggered the beginning of the "Year of the Five Emperors" from which Septimius Severus, Pertinax's former mentoree, became the ultimate victor.

This previously untold story brings a fascinating and important figure out of the shadows. A self-made everyman, a man of principle and ambition, a role model respected by his contemporaries, Pertinax's remarkable story offers a unique and panoramic insight into the late 2nd century AD Principate Empire.

    Beyond 1619 - The Atlantic...

Beyond 1619 brings an Atlantic and hemispheric perspective to the year 1619 as a marker of American slavery's origins and the beginnings of the Black experience in what would become the United States by situating the roots of racial slavery in a broader, comparative context.

In recent years, an extensive public dialogue regarding the long shadow of racism in the United States has pushed Americans to confront the insidious history of race-based slavery and its aftermath, with 1619—the year that the first recorded enslaved persons of African descent arrived in British North America—taking center stage as its starting point. Yet this dialogue has narrowed our understanding of slavery, race, and their repercussions to the U.S. context. Beyond 1619 showcases the results when scholars examine and put into conversation multiple empires, regions, peoples, and cultures to get a more complete view of the rise of racial slavery in the Americas.

Painting racial slavery's emergence on a hemispheric canvas, and in one compact volume, provides historical context beyond the 1619 moment for discussions of slavery, racism, antiracism, freedom, and lasting inequalities. This volume shines new light on these topics and illustrates the centrality of racial slavery, and contests over its rise, in nearly every corner of the early modern Atlantic World.

Over the past thirty years, Dr. Monastra has treated more than 15,000 clients who have ADHD. In this indispensable book he shares the knowledge he has gained.

Children with ADHD struggle so much with inattention or hyperactivity and impulsivity that they have trouble succeeding at home, at school, with friends, or on the playing field. Arranged in a series of sequential lessons to be taken "one at a time," beginning with the causes of ADHD and the most common medical treatments.

Engaging and straightforward, the book is directed at parents of children who have, or might have, ADHD. Dr. Monastra discusses all the relevant issues for parents, including psychological treatment, diet, educational laws, and practical coping strategies for both parents and children. Parenting Children With ADHD, now in its second edition, shows how you can become your child's best advocate, helping to improve attention, behavioral control, and social skills.

Updates to this edition include information on new diagnostic tests, medications, and treatments; tips to help your school district create a safe for your child; and a new chapter on teaching life values, such as generosity and kindness.
