Summary

The "Collected Works of George Bernard Shaw" is a comprehensive compendium that encapsulates the sharp wit, social criticism, and innovative theatrical techniques of one of the 20th century's most influential playwrights. This anthology showcases Shaw's extensive oeuvre, from his celebrated plays like "Pygmalion" and "Saint Joan" to his essays and prefaces that unveil his progressive ideas on morality, gender, and politics. Shaw's literary style is marked by a characteristic blend of humor and ideology, illuminated by his penchant for dialect and lively character interactions. As part of the broader context of modernist literature, Shaw's works significantly challenged prevailing norms and conventions, prompting readers to reflect critically on societal constructs. George Bernard Shaw, an ardent advocate for social reform, drew from his experiences within turn-of-the-century London, a city grappling with rapid industrialization and shifting social values. His diverse background in journalism, theatre, and socialism deeply informed his writing, enabling him to blend entertainment with incisive commentary. Shaw's legacy as a playwright extends beyond the stage as he continually provoked thought and debate in the public sphere about the moral obligations of individuals within society. Engaging with the "Collected Works of George Bernard Shaw" is essential for readers seeking a deeper understanding of the complexities of human nature and society. This anthology invites both seasoned scholars and newcomers to explore Shaw's brilliance, providing a robust framework for appreciating his contributions to literature and the ongoing dialogue about social justice and reform. This collection not only enshrines Shaw's literary gifts but also serves as a catalyst for contemporary reflections on lasting societal themes.

Chapter 6 - Disconnect - Disconnect is about the psychological action of disconnecting from everything that influences you in a negative manner. To not listen to the thoughts and voices of others who begin to steer your life, but instead, to focus on what you want and what you believe in. In short, it is the disconnection from outside influences, replaced with the connection to what's inside.

Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.The first appearance of the work in print was Faust, a Fragment, published in 1790. Goethe completed a preliminary version of what is now known as Part One in 1806. Its publication in 1808 was followed by the revised 1828–29 edition, the last to be edited by Goethe himself.Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831; it was published posthumously the following year. In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years.

Many times in life we cannot see what is in our future, or what is coming down the road. In those moments, we have to walk by faith, not by sight. Being blind, Debby has had many of those experiences, as a parent, counselor, grandparent and someone who simply loves life. Her faith in a God who loves us shifts that frightening scenario into one of confidence and peace. In this book, through stories and poetry, she describes some of those moments where she has walked by faith, not by sight, both spiritually and literally. Chapter 1 is about a water slide. "In reflecting on that experience, I at first thought that I perhaps should have asked more questions. Perhaps I should have known that it was three stories up with lots of curves and bumps. But maybe not. If I had known all that, I might would have opted out. And just think of all the fun I would have missed." Debby (Zook) Green was born in Central Pennsylvania into a Mennonite pastor's family, one of five children. With normal sight at birth, she gradually lost her vision and by the age of 20, had only light perception. That did not stop her from completing college and having a career in counseling, first as a rehabilitation counselor with the state of Kentucky and then as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. She was married and has a daughter and two grandsons. Stories about those early years of sight loss can be found in a previously published book, Debby. Currently, she resides in Elizabethtown, Kentucky where she is active in her church, Calvary Assembly of God. She provides counseling services through her private practice, Transformation Christian Counseling and makes frequent trips to Tennessee to hang out with her grandsons.
