Farley Mowat's youth was charmed and hilarious, and unbelievably free in its access to unspoiled nature through bird-banding expeditions and overnight outings in the dead of winter. The author writes of sleeping in haystacks for survival, and other adventures, with equal shares of Booth Tarkington and Jack London. He also brings back Mutt, the famous hero-dog of his classic The Dog Who Wouldn't Be, and his pet owl Wol, hero of Owls in the Family. The tale of an outrageous and clever boy, Born Naked takes its place as the foundation of the Farley Mowat canon.

In the midst of ongoing news about Southwestern water scarcity, Martha Retallick sees an opportunity. For 20 years, she has been transforming her central Tucson home into an urban oasis. The secret to her success: Water harvesting. Since Retallick purchased her central Tucson home in 2004, she has incorporated two types of water harvesting – passive and active – into her landscape. Passive water harvesting is simply the act of sculpting the landscape to direct the water to where it should be – like plants – and away from where it shouldn’t be – like a home’s foundation. Retallick’s landscape incorporates three passive water harvesting features – basins, berms, and drainage swales. Collectively, these earthworks eliminate the need for landscape irrigation that’s connected to the municipal water supply, which is served by Tucson Water. According to Tucson Water, approximately 40 percent of water use in Tucson is outdoors. This includes residential uses like landscape irrigation and garden watering. Retallick’s irrigation-free landscape also includes two active water harvesting features, a 1,500-gallon cistern that collects rainwater for use in the back-yard vegetable garden, and a laundry-to-landscape greywater harvesting system that diverts wastewater from the washing machine to three fruit trees. City Nature is illustrated with more than 60 of Retallick’s color photographs, which show the wide variety of plant life on her property, the birds she shares it with, and her various do-it-herself projects, the most notable being a kinetic sculpture created from a recycled chandelier. The book also includes a list of suggested resources that encompasses books, websites, organizations, and businesses that can aid readers interested in desert gardening and landscaping, and in water conservation.

Biochemical engineering integrates the principles of biology, chemistry, and engineering to develop processes for the large-scale production of valuable biochemicals. This interdisciplinary field plays a crucial role in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food and beverage, and environmental engineering.

One of the fundamental aspects of biochemical engineering is fermentation, which involves the controlled growth of microorganisms like bacteria, yeast, or fungi to produce desired compounds. These microorganisms can be genetically engineered or selected for their ability to synthesize specific products, such as antibiotics, vitamins, or biofuels.

Biocatalysis is another key area within biochemical engineering, focusing on the use of enzymes or whole cells to catalyze chemical reactions. By harnessing the specificity and efficiency of biological catalysts, biocatalysis offers environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions for chemical synthesis and manufacturing processes.

Bioseparation techniques are essential for isolating and purifying target biomolecules from complex mixtures produced during fermentation or biocatalytic reactions. These techniques include filtration, chromatography, centrifugation, and membrane processes, which enable the recovery of high-purity products for further downstream processing.

The troubled history of the Hubble constant told in an authoritative, comprehensible, and entertaining manner

In 1927 Georges Lemaître argued that our universe is expanding, a conclusion rendered more startling by the astronomical data that backed it up, presented two years later by Edwin Hubble. The speed of this expansion is governed by Hubble's constant, and Discordance tells its troubled history.

This unpredictable and fascinating story begins with the first tentative steps to measure the distances to nearby stars and galaxies. It traces the extraordinary interplay between cosmological theory and astronomical observation which has given us the standard Big Bang theory. It was not all plain sailing, and the narrative takes us through the discovery of dark matter, the Hubble Wars of the 1970s, the invention of cosmic inflation, and other crucial scientific moments. Further satellite missions were expected to add to the clarity of our measurements. But from about 2009 onward, the results began to diverge. This is the Hubble tension and perhaps even a crisis.

Jim Baggott clearly and entertainingly guides the reader through this gripping scientific voyage--one littered with crises of confidence, astonishing discoveries, and extraordinary personalities--which still continues today.
