“There will never be beings unloved by God, since God is absolute love.” – Hans Urs von BalthasarExplore the profound spirituality of Hans Urs von Balthasar. Born in Switzerland, Balthasar (1905–1988) was one of the most prolific and sophisticated Catholic thinkers of the twentieth century. As you will discover, Balthasar’s theology provides a powerful model for the Catholic Church in the modern world. In Hans Urs von Balthasar: Rediscovering Holistic Christianity, you will join Balthasar expert Dr. Kevin Mongrain (Ph.D., Yale University) in exploring this great theologian. When first approaching Balthasar, his corpus of works can seem like a daunting, complex labyrinth. Under Dr. Mongrain’s guidance, however, you will discover enlightening threads throughout Balthasar’s powerful thought.Deeply influenced by the Jesuits, Balthasar eventually left the Society of Jesus to become a secular priest, that is, wholly engaged in the world. As you will see in this course, he became a spokesperson of the contemplative-charismatic strand of the Catholic tradition. His vision of the Church promoted unity between its hierarchical, theological, and contemplative strands.Under Dr. Mongrain’s guidance, you will explore Balthasar’s ideas about authentic prayer, mystical experience, and prophecy. You will also see how his ideas addressed the modern world. Balthasar wove together spirituality and metaphysics, and he sought a holistic Christianity, that is, one that wove together the visions of the saints throughout the ages.Experience the power of Balthasar’s vision today. This classic WWI memoir by a decorated infantryman and historian presents a vivid account of life in the trenches on the Western Front.   During World War One, Major Guy Chapman, OBE MC, served in the Royal Fusiliers and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery. Joining soon after war was declared, Chapman was stationed in France and fought in the Battle of Arras.   When Chapman’s memoir, A Passionate Prodigality, was first published in 1933 it was hailed as one of the finest English works to have come out of the Great War. Today it reads with a graphic immediacy, not merely in the descriptions of the shock and carnage of war, but in its evocation of the men who fought—“certain soldiers who have now become a small quantity of Christian dust.”

Two war diaries that reveal “just what it was like, day by day, living in a Wehrmacht unit” (Internet Modeler).   This book is built around two recently discovered war diaries—one by a member of the 23rd Panzer Division, which served under Manstein in Russia, and the other by a member of Rommel’s Afrika Korps. Together, along with detailed timelines and brief overviews, they comprise a fascinating up-close look at the German side of World War II. The stories are told primarily in the first person present tense, as events occurred, and without the benefit—or liability—of postwar reflection.   The first diary, author unknown, covers April 1942 to March 1943, the momentous year when the tide of battle turned in the East. It first details the unit’s combat in the great German victory at Kharkov, then the advance to the Caucasus, and finally the lethal winter of 1942–43.   The second diary’s author was a soldier named Rolf Krengel, and the diary was the original, handwritten copy. It starts with the beginning of the war and ends shortly after the occupation. Serving primarily in North Africa, Krengel recounts with keen insight and flashes of humor the day-to-day challenges of the Afrika Korps. During one of the swirling battles in the desert, Krengel found himself sharing a tent with Rommel at a forward outpost.   Neither of the diarists was famous, nor of especially high rank. These are simply the brutally honest accounts written at the time by men of the Wehrmacht who participated in two of history’s most crucial campaigns.
