A week alone in Iceland's most isolated church. A grief too heavy to carry. An ancient darkness stirring beneath.
Pastor David Thornwell has lost his wife, his faith, and any reason to keep preaching. When he's offered a week-long silent retreat at the Black Church of Búðir — a tar-blackened chapel on Iceland's remote Snæfellsnes Peninsula — he accepts, hoping the vast silence of winter will either restore his shattered belief or give him permission to let go entirely.
But the Black Church holds secrets older than Christianity.
Strange journals left by previous caretakers describe lights that pool where they shouldn't, voices beneath the foundations, and an archaeological dig that was abandoned without explanation. Claw marks scar the heavy wooden door. And as the aurora borealis blazes across consecutive nights, David begins to understand that this church was not built to celebrate God's presence — but to keep vigil against something far more ancient.
With the ground cracking beneath the altar and shadows advancing across the frozen lava field, David must make an impossible choice: surrender to the vast indifference of deep time, or ring the bell — not as an act of faith, but as a single, defiant act of human will.
Set against the real landscape of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula — the inspiration for Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth — The Black Church is a story of grief, geological terror, and the thin line between worship and containment.
For readers who love the atmospheric dread of M.R. James, the cosmic scope of H.P. Lovecraft, and the emotional weight of literary horror.First published as part of The Buried and the Drowned: A Short Story Collection by J.F. Penn

Roger Dean Craig, a Deputy Sheriff in Dallas, found himself unwittingly thrust into history in the fall of 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. His eyewitness account and subsequent testimony would become a crucial piece of the puzzle. Craig was on duty in Dallas on November 22nd. The officer was initially disoriented by the sudden bursts of gunfire however, he quickly moved toward the source - the Texas School Book Depository. It was there, near the grassy knoll, Craig would have an encounter that would later define his role in the assassination. The deputy observed a man running from the building who then left in a station wagon driven by another man.

Craig saw the man again in the office of Captain Will Fritz. It was the recently arrested Lee Harvey Oswald. When the officer told his story about the man being picked up Oswald replied: "That station wagon belongs to Mrs. Paine... Don't try to tie her into this. She had nothing to do with it." Craig was also with Seymour Weitzman, Will Fritz, Eugene Boone, and Luke Mooney when the historic rifle was found on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository. Craig insisted the rifle was a 7.65 Mauser and not a Mannlicher-Carcano.

His testimony became crucial in the Warren Commission's investigation into Kennedy's assassination. Craig's account differed greatly from the official narrative, and he faced considerable pressure and scrutiny. Standing firm Craig found himself at odds with the official findings. Over the years, he faced many personal and professional challenges as a result of his involvement in this historic event. Craig spoke out about his experiences, even authoring a book titled "When They Kill a President," in which he detailed his observations and the difficulties he faced in the aftermath of that tragic day. This is his riveting untold story!

A haunting Sherlock Holmes mystery that blends secrecy, compassion, and chilling revelation. The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger follows Dr. Watson as he recounts one of Holmes’s most unsettling cases: a woman who hides her disfigured face behind a constant veil and lives in isolation, burdened by a terrible past. As Holmes uncovers the truth behind her self-imposed imprisonment, the story shifts from conventional detective work to a powerful meditation on justice, mercy, and the human cost of violence. Atmospheric, psychologically rich, and deeply humane, this late Holmes tale showcases Arthur Conan Doyle at his most restrained and emotionally resonant—essential reading for fans of classic mystery and literary suspense.
