Sinossi

In "Salvation Syrup; Or, Light On Darkest England," G. W. Foote employs a satirical lens to explore the moral and social dilemmas of Victorian England. The book is structured as a fierce critique of the prevailing socio-religious institutions, presenting a narrative that delves into themes of hypocrisy and the genuine need for reform. Foote's sharp wit and incisive prose, characteristic of his broader body of work, illuminate the dissonance between the lofty ideals of salvation espoused by religious figures and the grim realities facing the underprivileged. This literary endeavor not only reflects Foote's staunch atheist beliefs but also aligns with the broader literary context of the time, wherein many writers grappled with the implications of social justice amidst an increasingly industrialized society. G. W. Foote, a prominent figure in the 19th-century atheist movement, often challenged the societal norms of his time through a provocative writing style. As the editor of the "Freethinker," Foote was deeply immersed in discussions about religion, morality, and politics, which undoubtedly influenced his motivations for writing this text. His commitment to social reform and relentless pursuit of truth underscore the urgency that permeates "Salvation Syrup," marking it as a significant contribution to the literature of dissent. I highly recommend "Salvation Syrup" to readers interested in Victorian literature, social critique, and the intersections of religion and society. Foote's daring exploration of the hypocrisy within the moral fabric of his time offers invaluable insights that remain relevant today. This book serves not only as an engaging read but also as a profound commentary on the enduring struggle for ethical integrity and social justice.

Started in the wake of George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has become a powerful and incendiary campaign demanding redress for the brutal and unjustified treatment of black bodies by law enforcement in the United States. The movement is only a few years old, but as Christopher J. Lebron argues in this book, the sentiment behind it is not; the plea and demand that "Black Lives Matter" comes out of a much older and richer tradition arguing for the equal dignity—and not just equal rights—of black people.

In this updated edition, The Making of Black Lives Matter presents a condensed and accessible intellectual history of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and expands on the movement's relevancy. This edition includes a new introduction that explores how the movement's core ideas have been challenged, re-affirmed, and re-imagined during the white nationalism of the Trump years, as well as a new chapter that examines the ideas and importance of Angela Davis and Amiri Baraka as significant participants in the Black Power Movement and Black Arts Movement, respectively. Drawing on the work of Davis, Baraka, and other revolutionary black public intellectuals, Lebron clarifies what it means to assert that "Black Lives Matter" when faced with contemporary instances of anti-black law enforcement.

    Domestication of Dogs and Cats...

As the oft-repeated and invariably accurate pearl of wisdom goes, a dog truly is man's best friend. For a long time, people have almost universally loved dogs, and it seems to have been that way for at least tens of thousands of years. When affection is abundantly and consistently expressed, this pure, unspoken, wholesome love is one that is very much requited, and then some. This bond can be demonstrated by the mere existence of pet keepers who unironically refer to themselves as “dog parents,” not merely “dog owners.”
Of course, this camaraderie between man and dog did not materialize overnight. Quite the contrary, the relationship between people and dogs gradually evolved and steadily strengthened over several millennia, following a premise best summed up by the dog's metamorphosis from a predator to a lifelong companion. Apart from friendship and companionship, dogs may have been the first animal to be domesticated, and they have been trained to provide loyal and competent service in a variety of fields, ranging from seeing-eye dogs to vest-wearing police partners, among other lines of work.
People's obsession with felines is an enigma in and of itself. Unlike dogs, famously known as man's most excitable, trustworthy, and loyal friend, cats are oftentimes indifferent, guarded, and yet finicky little furry creatures who only yearn for attention and affection when one is neck-deep in work or otherwise preoccupied. And still, people adore them all the same.
In a recent poll that surveyed 600 American college students, 60% of the participants identified themselves as “dog lovers,” whereas only 11% pledged their love for cats. The remaining 29% regarded themselves as fans of both critters or fans of neither. Be that as it may, there is said to be anywhere between a staggering 88=94 million pet cats in the United States alone, which eclipses the roughly 84-90 million pet dogs in the country.
