Summary

The Gambler by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky is a short novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky about a young tutor in the employment of a formerly wealthy Russian general. The novella reflects Dostoevsky's own addiction to roulette, which was in more ways than one the inspiration for the book: Dostoevsky completed the novella in 1866 under a strict deadline to pay off gambling debts.

The first-person narrative is told from the point of view of Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor working for a Russian family living in a suite at a German hotel. The patriarch of the family, The General, is indebted to the Frenchman de Grieux and has mortgaged his property in Russia to pay only a small amount of his debt.

Upon learning of the illness of his wealthy aunt, "Grandmother", he sends streams of telegrams to Moscow and awaits the news of her demise. His expected inheritance will pay his debts and gain Mademoiselle Blanche de Cominges's hand in marriage.

Alexei is hopelessly in love with Polina, the General's niece. She asks him to go to the town's casino and place a bet for her. After hesitations, he succumbs and ends up winning at the roulette table. He returns to her the winnings but she will not tell him the reason she needs money. She only laughs in his face (as she does when he professes his love) and treats him with cold indifference, if not downright malice.

He only learns the details of the General's and Polina's financial state later in the story through his long-time acquaintance, Mr. Astley. Astley is a shy Englishman who seems to share Alexei's fondness of Polina. He comes from English nobility and has a good deal of money.

    H. P. Lovecraft’s “Two Black Bottles,” co-written with Wilfred Blanch Talman, unfolds in the eerie, isolated village of Daalbergen—where superstition clings to every doorstep and the dead are never entirely at rest. When a young man arrives to settle his late uncle’s affairs, he’s greeted with fearful whispers about a sinister sexton, a deserted church, and a grave said to disturb itself in the night. What begins as a simple inheritance quickly spirals into a confrontation with forbidden rites, buried truths, and a soul trapped where no soul should be. Lovecraft guides the reader into a world where atmosphere is everything and dread grows with each turn of the page.
The deeper the narrator explores the abandoned parsonage and its shadowed belfry, the more he realizes that the villagers’ fears may be rooted in dangerous truths. Strange manuscripts, muttered incantations, and two mysterious black bottles hold the key to a long-buried horror—one that refuses to remain hidden.
    H. P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) reshaped speculative fiction with his cosmic worldview, philosophical darkness, and meticulous world-building. His stories explored the limits of human understanding and the ancient forces lurking beyond it, influencing generations of writers, filmmakers, and artists.
Though Lovecraft struggled for recognition during his lifetime, his work later became foundational to modern horror and dark fantasy. Tales like “The Shadow Over Innsmouth,” “The Call of Cthulhu,” and “The Colour Out of Space” cemented his status as one of the most influential voices in 20th-century genre fiction.

    Book 2 of 6 The Centaur's Prophecy

This story is summarized as follows:

In The Centaur’s Prophecy, Dr. Minerva Voss deciphers a star-map leading to Enceladus, where the last Sagittari centaur, Chiron, reveals a dire truth: Jove imprisons Nyx, a void entity now breaking free. The Syndicate, led by Darius Kane, attacks, seeking to weaponize this power. Chiron imprints Minerva with celestial runes, showing her visions of a cosmic arrow—the only weapon capable of sealing Nyx. As the Library collapses, Minerva’s team escapes, pursued by Kane’s centaur-hybrid drones. The runes guide them toward the Horsehead Nebula, where the arrow is hidden. With the Syndicate closing in and Nyx’s corruption spreading, Minerva must master her new connection to the Sagittari or risk annihilation. The hunt for the arrow becomes a race against time, blending ancient mythology and interstellar warfare, setting the stage for a battle that will decide humanity’s fate.

This is the second of six audiobooks in the series, the next will become available in the very near future and I do hope you enjoy this second instalment, and it's only $3, all subsequent will remain at that price.

I have worked very hard and meticulously to provide you with an enjoyable experience, the initial opening credit music which does run to approximately 2 1/2 minutes and prepares you for the start, synthesizer, bass and cymbals in a soul/funk form. The closing music ends the tale on a darker tone and at about 2 minutes and the same musical instruments, genre and industrial/fearful mood but with more caution added.

The story itself runs to about 15 minutes and is narrated in my own voice.

I do hope you enjoy this audiobook and let me know what you think, there are a lot more to come!
