Summary

Wallenstein by Friedrich Schiller is a monumental historical drama that explores ambition, loyalty, betrayal, and the complex nature of political power. Set during the devastating Thirty Years' War in 17th-century Europe, the play portrays the rise and fall of Albrecht von Wallenstein, a brilliant yet controversial military commander whose ambition places him at the center of a dangerous political storm. ⚔️

Wallenstein is a powerful general serving the Holy Roman Emperor, admired for his strategic genius and commanding influence over his army. However, his growing authority and independent spirit begin to alarm the imperial court. Suspicion spreads that Wallenstein may be planning to challenge the Emperor's authority or even negotiate with enemy forces to secure his own power. As political tensions intensify, alliances become fragile and trust begins to crumble.

Schiller masterfully depicts Wallenstein as a complex and deeply human character—both visionary and flawed. Driven by ambition and guided by mysterious astrological prophecies, he struggles between loyalty to the empire and his own desire for autonomy and greatness. Around him, a network of officers, courtiers, and conspirators must decide where their loyalties lie, knowing that their choices could determine the fate of nations.

Through rich dialogue and powerful dramatic scenes, Wallenstein explores timeless themes such as the moral cost of power, the uncertainty of destiny, and the fragile nature of political allegiance. Schiller combines historical events with philosophical depth, creating a compelling portrait of a leader whose rise to greatness ultimately leads him toward tragedy.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements of German classical drama, Wallenstein stands as an epic reflection on leadership, fate, and the turbulent forces that shape history. 📖 Schiller's masterful storytelling brings the chaos of war and the drama of political intrigue vividly to life, making this work a lasting masterpiece of European literature.

A baby is born in 1666, the year of "Fire Horse" according to Japanese tradition, at the House of Metzengerstein in an area between Royal Hungary and the territory inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons. Frederick von Metzengerstein is nurtured by his dependable servant Bela after the Baroness passes away shortly after giving birth to him. The youngster lives a pleasant life for many years until his ailing father Baron Gotfrid is forced to negotiate the future of the region with his mortal rival Baron Willhelm von Berlifitzing. Frederick experiences a nightmare inside that castle, which haunts him for years until his father's passing, at which point the young master assumes ultimate power at the age of 17. During the celebratory ceremonies for the transition of power, Baron Berlifizing dies as a result of a fire that started in the House of Berlifitzing at their stables. By some strange coincidence, that same night, a black stallion, a proper wild beast, is captured by the guards close to the Metzengerstein property. The boy falls in love with the gorgeous animal at first sight, which alteres his fate and mental state. The secret that was eating him alive since he was an infant needs to be revealed sooner than later...
The new version of this Edgar Allan Poe tale follows closely the events in the original, with countless added historic elements and details, not mentioned by Poe, but still in his spirit. It can speak to the modern reader or draw in new audience to the works of the great author and poet, since it is now "dirtier", sadder, more dramatic, and feels extremely realistic. The bonus features in this book are directly tied to the narrative, and the graphics will provide a glimpse into the worlds that the stories describe.

Tenebrae is the ancient Latin word for darkness—the gradual extinguishment of light, one candle flame at a time.

In this memoir told in poems, Dan Flanigan follows that gradual dimming through the last illness and death of his wife. Written in free verse and prose poems, Tenebrae moves across the full arc of a long marriage. These poems refuse the familiar consolations. There is no posturing, no preciousness, no self-pity. A dying woman is rendered as fully human—strong, flawed, dignified, unmistakably herself—and the speaker does not cast himself as hero.

Other poems in the book reflect this same grappling with the fundamental issues of our lives—loss, hope, despair and acceptance, reflecting a compassionate embrace of the human condition.

If you think you don’t like poetry, Tenebrae may change your mind.
These are truly poems for the people—plain but exquisitely crafted and expressed in a language that is both elegant and easy to understand… They reach from the heart to the heart.

King Henry is married to Catherine of Aragon, but he has been smitten by the charms of the queen's maid of honor, Anne Boleyn, and is tempted to divorce his dignified and noble wife.
Meanwhile, the lords of England resent the influence of Henry's trusted advisor, Cardinal Wolsey, who is gradually drawing power into his own hands. As Catherine and Wolsey suffer their tragic falls, new figures rise to fill their places, but they, too, will be brought low by the inexorable sweep of time and fortune.
This colorful history play, possibly written in collaboration with John Fletcher, comes from the very end of Shakespeare's dramatic career.
Paul Jesson plays Henry VIII, and Jane Lapotaire plays Queen Catherine. Timothy West is Cardinal Wolsey.
