Summary

That cold morning in July 1943 still haunted 633 Squadron, for only a single Mosquito made it back from the suicidal but successful Operation Vesuvius. Now, barely a year later, the Germans were once more processing the secret “element” known as IMI in a strongly defended facility in Norway and were about to move their stocks to the safety of Germany. If successful, the whole tide of the war would be turned. Once again, it meant another “mission impossible” for 633 Squadron...

Frederick E. Smith (1919-2012) joined the R.A.F. in 1939 as a wireless operator/air gunner and commenced service in early 1940, serving in Britain, Africa and finally the Far East. At the end of the war, he married and worked for several years in South Africa before returning to England to fulfill his life-long ambition to write. Two years later, his first play was produced and his first novel published. Since then, he wrote over forty novels, about eighty short stories, and two plays. Two novels, 633 Squadron and The Devil Doll, were made into films, and one, A Killing for the Hawks, won the Mark Twain Literary Award.

Greymouth, New Zealand, 1866: The Burgess gang was in town, and a young surveyor from one of the country's leading families had vanished in the back country. Inspector James has never forgotten that year.
In the gold mining town of Greymouth, where drunks fell asleep smoking and burned down their houses, the town was constantly inundated with floods, and fifty-seven hotels had sprung up in a year to accommodate the hordes of miners and gold thieves, Inspector William Henry James was tasked with keeping the town safe with a small force of troopers.
In 1888, forced into retirement by government cuts, James walks home beside the Whanganui River remembering his association with a series of murders by the notorious Burgess gang: back in 1866 he had forced the gang to leave Greymouth. The gang took a steamer up to Nelson and within days killed five men on the Maungatapu Track. Soon after, Inspector James discovered the body of a young surveyor, George Dobson, murdered by Burgess and his crew. The gang was gone, but one guilty man remained, and James was determined to bring him to trial. The events that transpired haunted him for the rest of his life.

*Northanger Abbey* is a delightful coming-of-age novel that playfully critiques the conventions of Gothic literature. At the heart of the story is the endearingly naïve Catherine Morland, a seventeen-year-old who hails from a modest country parsonage. During a few enchanting weeks spent in the bustling spa town of Bath, Catherine forms a captivating connection with the charming Henry Tilney, who graciously invites her to experience the grandeur of his family estate, Northanger Abbey.
Upon her arrival at the Abbey, an ancient mansion steeped in mystery and echoes of the past, Catherine's imagination runs wild. Captivated by her passion for Gothic thrillers, she begins to perceive an eerie atmosphere that fuels her burgeoning suspicions. Whispers of dark secrets swirl around her thoughts: What truly lies behind the untimely death of Henry’s mother? Is there a hidden malevolence lurking within the elegant, shadowy chambers of the Abbey? Can she place her trust in the enigmatic Henry, or could he himself be entangled in a sinister plot?
As her vivid imagination spirals, Catherine interprets mundane happenings as ominous omens, her heart racing with each twist of her thoughts. However, it is Henry’s gentle encouragement that ultimately guides her to discern the line between fiction and reality, reminding her that life, with all its unpredictability, can often be far stranger than art.
Filled with spirited charm and insightful commentary, *Northanger Abbey* offers a lighthearted yet astute exploration of love, marriage, and the perils of letting one's imagination run wild.
