Summary

"The soul that is within me no man can degrade."

In My Bondage and My Freedom, Frederick Douglass deepens his already powerful life story, moving beyond his escape from slavery to examine the moral, political, and spiritual dimensions of oppression. This second autobiography is not only a record of unimaginable hardship and personal triumph—it's a brilliant critique of the institution of slavery and a call to justice that still resonates today.

Originally published in 1855, this edition features extensive annotations and historical context, offering readers insight into Douglass's growth as an intellectual, activist, and national leader.

A cornerstone of American literature, this book remains essential reading for anyone interested in freedom, dignity, and the struggle for human rights.

There is one problem that surpasses all others in its impact on men, women, and society. It is the family father wound. We focus on the importance of mothers in determining the well-being of children. Yet, without the support of their fathers, men become disconnected from their true selves, feeling that others are controlling their lives. The family father wound may be the most pervasive, most important, and least recognized problem facing men and their families today. However, the family father wound, resulting from physical or emotional absence, has been largely ignored. Disconnected males, without a strong sense of inner guidance, can become abusive towards women and destructive towards men. We've seen this with the outpouring of sexual abuse allegations involving many prominent men.More than 20 million children live in a home without the physical presence of a father. Millions more have dads who are physically present, but emotionally absent. If it were classified as a disease, fatherlessness would be an epidemic worthy of attention as a national emergency. The male anger and rage we see in everything from domestic violence to school shootings has its roots, I believe, in trauma resulting from growing up in families with disconnected and dysfunctional fathers. Yet, this childhood wounding can be healed. My 15th book, My Distant Dad: Healing the Family Father Wound is an adventure story to find the father I lost when I was five years old. It's also a tale of redemption and healing for both my father and myself.

Although the slave systems required the continual use of force and coercion, as well as the harsh punishment of any rebellion, slaves were not a helpless labor force terrorized into obedience and docility. Slaves resisted and sometimes rebelled, and over the centuries there were thousands of slave rebellions of varying sizes. Slaves commonly resisted in many ways, such as sabotaging their tools and the crops they were tending, but much more rarely slaves violently rebelled, which were for the most part put down with extreme violence.
Of course, a fairly common form of resistance was running away and seeking hiding places in environments where slave catchers experienced difficulty. Slaves who ran and hid out, or who made their own settlements, were called maroons, from the Spanish word cimarron, which means “wild” or “untamed.” The term that historians commonly use to describe this is marronage, adapted from the French word maron, meaning the same as maroon. Marronage took two forms, grand and petty. Grand marronage was permanent, with escapees joining together to establish lasting settlements in inaccessible areas in mountains and swamps, sometimes preferring death rather than being caught and enslaved again.
The Gullah Geechee, or the “Gullah” for short, are the descendants and rightful heirs of the once-shackled slaves who resided in these parts. As the guardians and torch holders of the incredible legacy left behind by their persevering ancestors, the modern Gullah spare no effort in preserving the inherently unique customs and traditions, complete with their own creole tongue, that have been passed down from one generation to the next.

An examination of how the media is under fire and how to safeguard journalists and the information they seek to share with the public.Journalists are being imprisoned and killed in record numbers. Online surveillance is annihilating privacy, and the Internet can be brought under government control at any time. Joel Simon, the executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, warns that we can no longer assume that our global information ecosystem is stable, protected, and robust. Journalists are increasingly vulnerable to attack by authoritarian governments, militants, criminals, and terrorists, who all seek to use technology, political pressure, and violence to set the global information agenda.Reporting from Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, and Mexico, among other hotspots, Simon finds journalists under threat from all sides. The result is a growing crisis in information—a shortage of the news we need to make sense of our globalized world and fight human rights abuses, manage conflict, and promote accountability. Drawing on his experience defending journalists on the front lines, he calls on “global citizens,” U.S. policy makers, international law advocates, and human rights groups to create a global freedom-of-expression agenda tied to trade, climate, and other major negotiations. He proposes ten key priorities, including combating the murder of journalists, ending censorship, and developing a global free-expression charter to challenge the criminal and corrupt forces that seek to manipulate the world's news.“Wise and insightful. [Simon] offers hope to all who care about maintaining the free flow of information in a world full of would-be censors.”—Ann Cooper, Columbia Journalism School

“A real find. Not a how-to manual or step-by-step action plan, it instead offers an unyielding glimpse into the hearts, minds and behaviors of seniors.” —Marilee Driscoll, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Long-Term Care Planning   This collection of vignettes addresses senior concerns and how their adult children address those concerns. Read stories about real people and real events, and how they relate to the aging process.   “Sue Cunningham has written a little gem of a book that is both insightful and practical. Drawing on her years of experience working with the children of aging parents, she has collected a series of pithy stories and observations that simultaneously inspire and educate. Unwrapping the Sandwich Generation is a recommended read for professionals and children of elders alike!” —John Paul Marosy, president, Bringing Elder Care Home LLC, MA   “Not a ‘how to’ book, but rather real life, relatable stories that provide a glimpse into what it’s like to be part of the sandwich generation.” —CareGivers.com, “9 Sanity Saving Resources for Sandwich Generation Month”   “Unwrapping the Sandwich Generation should be a bit of required reading for counselors of seniors who want to be knowledgeable of and familiar with all the things that are happening to the aging population. A must read for children of aging parents who are becoming more dependent than they want to become. A ‘coffee table’ tome for continuing care centers where we now allow our parents to reside, this book will be in use for some time to come for it is us.” —Fred L. The world of contemplative Christianity has yielded to the same voices for far too long, many of whom are from centuries before our time, with lives unlike our own, and often from experiences disconnected from marginalization, oppression, and what it feels like to be an outsider.

Cassidy Hall, an LGBTQIA+ Christian contemplative scholar and podcast host, takes us on a journey to queer the contemplative tradition.

As queerness reawakened her own contemplative life, Hall discovered that queering and questioning the tradition allowed her to listen more closely to voices that are queer, marginalized, and oppressed. In showing us the way, she helps us envision what contemplative faith can look like, what spiritual spaces we can reclaim for welcome—and how queering contemplation, and lifting up queer contemplative voices, frees us to seek the infinite possibility of our own identity and engage our spiritual lives with open hearts and open hands.

Whether you're queer or want to queer your own perspectives, Hall throws open the doors of contemplative spirituality for all, bringing us to contemplation in very new, sometimes old, but always queer ways.

Acclaimed brain scientist and host Robert Kuhn invites you to join world-leading philosophers and scientists: Christof Koch, Chief Scientist of the Allen Brain Institute, Ned Block of NYU, Peter van Inwagen of Notre Dame, and Daniel Clement Dennett III of Tufts, and many more. In this series, you’ll explore one of humanity’s most profound questions: Do you create your own destiny? Or does the universe deal you a hand that you have to play with? As you explore competing philosophies, you will find that every answer raises fascinating new questions about morality, fate, consciousness, and the existence of a higher power. Recent neuroscientific discoveries only fan the flames of the philosophical debate. Most scientific thought is predicated on the assumption that every action is determined by a prior action. But if that’s true, what does it imply about free will? In this series of three episodes, host Dr. Robert Lawrence Kuhn welcomes a total of 18 guest experts to discuss free will. Each episode is crafted as a series of one-on-one interviews. The implications of this debate are far-reaching and potentially paradigm-shifting. Now is your chance to unpack the details with the greatest minds the world has to offer. This course is part of the Learn25 Collection.
