Summary

In "The Visions of Dom Francisco de Quevedo Villegas," the renowned Spanish writer Francisco de Quevedo melds satirical prose with poetic flair, exploring themes of mortality, social critique, and the human condition through a series of vivid allegorical visions. This work exemplifies Quevedo's baroque literary style, characterized by intricate wordplay and clever, often biting, humor. Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Golden Age, where literature flourished amidst rigorous social and political turmoil, Quevedo's visions serve as both a reflection and critique of contemporary society, illustrating the moral decay and existential uncertainties faced during his time. Quevedo (1580-1645), a quintessential figure of Spanish literature, was influenced by his tumultuous experiences, including political intrigue and personal rivalries. His deep understanding of human nature, coupled with his sharp wit, enabled him to address profound philosophical questions and societal injustices. As a leading figure in the literary world, Quevedo navigated through the complexities of his era, often using satire to confront the issues of his lifetime, thereby laying the foundation for modern Spanish literature. Readers seeking a thought-provoking examination of life's fundamental truths and societal shortcomings will find "The Visions of Dom Francisco de Quevedo Villegas" to be an illuminating experience. Its intricate intertwining of humor and profundity invites both reflection and conversation, making it a valuable addition to the canon of classic literature.

    RIVER

It's been way too long since I set foot on the streets of Mulligan's Mill. But after serving six years in the Marines I just wasn't ready to return home, so I got myself a motorcycle and spent another two years avoiding the idea of going back—hoping that reuniting with my best friend Clarry would wash away all the hurt and help me start over again.

I'm a war hero and built like a tank, while he's still the sweet, sensitive, chubby kid he was at school, only now he runs the town's ice cream parlor. I can't put my finger on it, but the more I feel like I'm losing my best friend, the more desperately I'll fight to have him in my life . . .

    CLARRY

Oh fudgesicles! River is back in town and although I want to see him more than anything else in the world, I'm also terrified that my lifelong secret crush on him will somehow surface and he'll never want to speak to me again.

But like a scoop of Cherry Berry Bubblegum Bliss melting in the sun, I can feel my confidence dripping away and my terrified true feelings beginning to show. If I do blurt out my feelings for my best friend, will he stay strong and steadfast and reject my undying love for him?

Joe, who’s abducted along with his girlfriend by a sinister ‘Christian’ cult, which leaves the kids to die, hogtied and helpless in a derelict drainage tunnel slowly filling with sewage. Watched by the world’s media, Winston, Daisy and Bart reunite to use fame and the Daisy Chain to save two teenage lives  and their own souls  from the filth that’s about to drown them. Wotcha! is a comic spit in the eye of born again zealots with a wink and a twinkle to the rest of us  but it’s also deadly serious. Mining a rich seam of coalblack humour and sex, drugs and rock and roll, it starts on a bittersweet nostalgia trip and builds up to the pace of a thriller. CONTROVERSIAL STUFF? Its themes and explicit language make this a candidate for one of those ‘parental advisory’ stickers they put on CDs these days. Does that make WOTCHA! a book that people aged under sixteen shouldn’t read? In the author’s opinion  absolutely not. ‘If rude words and references to sex, drugs and rock and roll upset you per se, this book’s not for you. But if you believe, as I do, that a sense of humour is what separates “naughty” from “evil”, I think you might enjoy this story, laugh at the funny bits, think about the serious bits and read the redemption between the lines.’
