Sinossi

The Essays are written in a wide range of styles, from the plain and unadorned to the epigrammatic. They cover topics drawn from both public and private life, and in each case the essays cover their topics systematically from a number of different angles, weighing one argument against another. Though Bacon considered the Essays "but as recreation of my other studies", he was given high praise by his contemporaries, even to the point of crediting him with having invented the essay form.

Some time ago at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos I was with a group of people and we talked about the most memorable moments of our lives. One of us, the first to speak, talked about the day he secured his first job. Another spoke of the day he passed his University degree examination. For another group member, it was the day he retired from the Nigerian Army. The following person said that his most memorable day was the day he heard that his wife was off the danger list after a severe surgical operation. Then, the elderly man who had been listening intently to our discussion cut in and said, 'As far as I am concerned, the most memorable day of my life was when my autobiography, which showcased the story of my life from birth to date was publicly presented and launched'.
He added that his autobiography contained his footprints on the sand of history which he wants to pass on to the present and future generations as a source of inspiration. According to him, his autobiography also contained the memorable relationships he had with his children. He was pleased that his autobiography had gone to various parts of the world for people who did not even know him to read about him. Listening to him speak, I shook my head and said, 'The words of elders are words of wisdom'. This book is intended to tell the story, without exaggeration, of his humble life of dedication and sacrifice to his family, society at large, and his Creator.

While the news is filled with villains and villainy, we do see a few famous heroes now and again. But what about the everyday heroes? The people going out of their way bring a little love into someone else's life? They deserve a time in the spotlight to inspire us all.
Life can be tough—but it helps to know other people have come through hard times with a smile on their face. In Make Your Own Sunshine, Janice Dean shares inspiring stories that will lift your spirit and touch your heart. Good people are all around us doing selfless deeds, from a firefighter who bravely battled for his colleague’s health after 9/11 to a good Samaritan who secretly pays for the coffees of everyone in line behind him.  You can’t help but smile reading about the teacher who cut her hair to make her student feel better.  And you may shed a tear when you hear the story of the dad who never missed writing a napkin note for his daughter, including stashing extra notes in case he lost his batter with cancer.  From a young man who makes bow ties for dogs waiting to be adopted to an Uber driver who brightened a new mom’s day by helping her buy baby clothes, the heroes in this story will warm your heart and stick in your mind.
Janice has made it her mission to uncover and document these good stories to inspire us and gives us a much-needed boost of optimism. All we have to do is open our minds and our hearts, to look for the light on a cloudy day. Because as she reminds us, if we don’t make our own sunshine—who will?

Father Michael McGivney was a man to whom ""family values"" represented more than mere rhetoric, a man who has left a legacy of hope still celebrated around the world.
In the late 1800s, discrimination against American Catholics was widespread. Called to action in 1882, Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, an organization that helped to save countless families. It has since grown to an international membership of 1.7 million men. At heart, though, Father McGivney was never anything more than an American parish priest, and nothing less than that, either.
In an incredible work of academic research, Douglas Brinkley and Julie M. Fenster re-create the life of Father McGivney, a fiercely dynamic and yet tenderhearted man. Moving and inspirational, Parish Priest chronicles the process of canonization that may well make Father McGivney the first American-born parish priest to be declared a saint by the Vatican.

Is there anything new to say about Robert Burns? John Cairney says it's time to trash Burns the Brand and come on the trail of the real Robert Burns. He is the best of travelling companions on the convivial, entertaining journey to the heart of the Burns story.
Alloway – Burns' birthplace. Tam O' Shanter draws on the Alloway Kirk witch stories first heard by Burns in his childhood
Mossgiel – Between 1784 and 1786 in a phenomenal burst out of creativity, Burns wrote some of his most memorable poems including 'Holy Willie's Prayer' and 'To a Mouse'
Kilmarnock – The famous Kilmarnock edition of Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect published in 1786
Edinburgh – Fame and Clarinda (among others) embraced him.
Dumfries – Burns died at the age of 37. The trail ends at the Burns Mausoleum in St Michael's Church graveyard.
Internationally known as 'the face of Robert Burns', John Cairney believes that the traditional Burns tourist trail urgently needs to find a new direction. In an acting career spanning 40 years, he has often lived and breathed Robert Burns on stage. On the Trail of Robert Burns shows just how well he has got under the skin of Burns' character. This fascinating journey around Scotland is a rediscovery of Scotland's national bard as a flesh and blood genius.
