As Balkan nationalisms and Great Power rivalry escalated, constitutional experiments collided with authoritarian security politics, culminating in the Young Turk era and the empire’s descent into near-continuous war. Moving through the Arab provinces, the Balkan crucible, and the catastrophic pressures of World War I, the book shows how governance, identity, and survival became inseparable—until occupation and resistance remade sovereignty itself. The story ends in 1922–1923 with the abolition of the sultanate and the emergence of a new political order, revealing how modern state-building grew out of imperial crisis rather than replacing it cleanly.

  Robert Pershing Wadlow (February 22, 1918 to July 15, 1940), also known as the Alton Giant, and the Giant of Illinois, was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. He is the tallest person in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow's height was 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) while his weight reached 439 lbs (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone (HGH). The following audio recordings are from a 1937 New York radio interview, a 1937 Ripley's Believe It or Not radio interview, and outtakes from 1930 film footage of Wadlow as a 12 year-old.

  By the time of the Revolution, the English that Americans spoke was recognizably different from the British variety. Americans added dozens of new words to the language, either borrowed from Native Americans (raccoon, persimmon, caucus) or created from repurposed English (backwoods, cane brake, salt lick). Americans had their own pronunciations (bath rhymed with hat, not hot) and their own spelling (honor, not honour), not to mention a host of new expressions that grew out of the American landscape and culture (blaze a trail, back track, pull up stakes).
