  "The Germany and The Agricola" is a book written by the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus, which is actually two separate works combined in one volume. 
  The first work, "The Agricola", is a biography of Tacitus' father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, who was a general and governor of Roman Britain during the late 1st century AD. The book details Agricola's military campaigns in Britain, his political career, and his personal character. It also provides a commentary on the Roman Empire and its relationship with its conquered territories. 
  The second work, "The Germany", is a description of the Germanic tribes that lived beyond the Rhine river, as well as the geography and customs of the region. Tacitus provides an account of the Germanic peoples' society, religion, and warfare, as well as their interactions with the Romans. He also offers a comparison of the Roman and Germanic societies, highlighting what he saw as the virtues and vices of both.

  Richard Overy is not the first scholar to take up the title question. In 1931, at the request of the League of Nations, Albert Einstein asked Sigmund Freud to collaborate on a short work examining whether there was "a way of delivering mankind from the menace of war." Published the next year as a pamphlet entitled Why War?, it conveyed Freud's conclusion that the "death drive" made any deliverance impossible—the psychological impulse to destruction was universal in the animal kingdom. The global wars of the later 1930s and 1940s seemed ample evidence of the dismal conclusion. 
   
   
   
  A preeminent historian of those wars, Overy brings vast knowledge to the title question and years of experience unraveling the knotted motivations of war. His approach is to separate the major drivers and motivations, and consider the ways each has contributed to organized conflict. They range from the impulses embedded in human biology and psychology, to the incentives to conflict developed through cultural evolution, to competition for resources. The discussions show remarkable range, delving deep into the Neolithic past, through the twentieth-century world wars, and up to the current conflict in Ukraine.

  Caroline Norton dazzled nineteenth-century society with her vivacity, her intelligence, her poetry, and in her role as an artist's muse. After her marriage in 1828 to the MP George Norton, she continued to attract friends and admirers to her salon in Westminster. Most prominent among her admirers was the widowed Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. 
   
   
   
  Racked with jealousy, George Norton took the Prime Minister to court, suing him for damages on account of his adultery with Caroline. A dramatic trial followed. Despite the unexpected and sensational result—acquittal—Norton was still able to legally deny Caroline access to her children. He also claimed her income as an author for himself, since the copyrights of a married woman belonged to her husband. 
   
   
   
  Yet Caroline refused to despair. Beset by the personal cruelties perpetrated by her husband and a society whose rules were set against her, she chose to fight. She channeled her energies in an area of much-needed reform: the rights of a married woman and specifically those of a mother. She campaigned tirelessly, achieving her first landmark victory with the Infant Custody Act of 1839. Provisions which are now taken for granted owe much to Caroline, who was determined to secure justice for women at all levels of society from the privileged to the dispossessed.

  Swami Satchidananda was the founder of Integral Yoga International. Swami was born into a loving spiritual family on December 22nd in 1914 during the month known as Margali, the Dawn of the Devas. From an early age, Swami (or Ramaswamy as he was known at the time) displayed many spiritual tendencies and a deep dedication to the truth. 
   
  Thus at the age of 28, he decided to devote himself full time to his spiritual practice. There then followed a period of seeking the wisdom and blessing of various saints and sages. Although a sannyasin Satchidananda was active in serving others and was happy to use modern technology to disseminate the teachings of yoga. Like many great Saints, Satchidananda believed all religions could lead seekers to the same goal. His interfaith motto was “Truth Is One, Paths Are Many.”
