The acclaimed Pulitzer Prize finalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Galileo’s Daughter crafts a luminous chronicle of the most famous woman in the history of science, and the untold story of the remarkable young women trained in her laboratory

“Even now, nearly a century after her death, Marie Curie remains the only female scientist most people can name,” writes Dava Sobel at the opening of her shining portrait of the sole Nobel laureate decorated in two separate fields of science—Physics in 1903 with her husband, Pierre, and Chemistry by herself in 1911. And yet, as brilliant and creative as she was in the laboratory, Marie Curie was equally memorable outside it. Grieving Pierre’s untimely death in 1906, she took his place as professor of physics at the Sorbonne, devotedly raised two brilliant daughters, drove a van she outfitted with X-ray equipment to the front lines of World War I, befriended Albert Einstein and other luminaries of twentieth-century physics, won support from two US presidents, and inspired generations of young women to pursue science as a way of life.

As Sobel did so masterfully in her portrait of Galileo through the prism of his daughter, she approaches Marie Curie from a unique angle, narrating her remarkable life of discovery and fame alongside the women who became her legacy—from France’s Marguerite Perey, who discovered the element francium, and Norway’s Ellen Gleditsch, to Mme. Curie’s elder daughter, Irène, winner of the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. For decades the only woman in the room at international scientific gatherings that probed new theories about the interior of the atom, Marie Curie traveled far and wide, despite constant illness, to share the secrets of radioactivity, a term she coined. Her two triumphant tours of the United States won her admirers for her modesty even as she was mobbed at every stop; her daughters, in Ève’s later recollection, “discovered all at once what the retiring woman with whom they had always lived meant to the world.”

With the consummate skill that made bestsellers of Longitude and Galileo’s Daughter, and the appreciation for women in science at the heart of The Glass Universe, Dava Sobel has authored a radiant biography and a masterpiece of storytelling, illuminating the life and enduring influence of one of the most consequential figures of our time.

In a world increasingly run by algorithms and artificial intelligence, Hatim Rahman traces how organizations are using algorithms to control workers in an "invisible cage."

Inside the Invisible Cage uses unique longitudinal data to investigate how digital labor platforms use algorithms to dictate the actions of high-skilled workers by determining accepted behaviors, work opportunities, and even success. As Hatim Rahman explains, employers can use algorithms to shift rules and guidelines without notice, explanation, or recourse for workers. The invisible cage signals a profound shift in the way markets and organizations categorize and ultimately control people.

Unlike previous forms of labor control, the invisible cage is ubiquitous, yet it is also opaque and shifting, which makes breaking free from it difficult for workers. This book traces how the invisible cage was developed over time and the implications it has for the spread of new technology, such as generative artificial intelligence. Inside the Invisible Cage also provides organizations, workers, and policymakers with insights on how to ensure the future of work has truly equitable, mutually beneficial outcomes.

A humorous and insightful look into what advice works, what doesn’t, and what it means to transform yourself, by the co-hosts of the popular By the Book podcast.
In each episode of their podcast By the Book, Jolenta Greenberg and Kristen Meinzer take a deep dive into a different self-help book, following its specific instructions, rules, and advice to the letter. From diet and productivity to decorating to social interactions, they try it all, record themselves along the way, then share what they’ve learned with their devoted and growing audience of fans who tune in.
Before they began their podcast, Jolenta wanted to believe the promises of self-help books, while Kristen was very much the skeptic. They embraced their differences of opinion, hoping they’d be good for laughs and downloads. But in the years since launching the By the Book, they’ve come to realize their show is about much more than humor. In fact, reading and following each book’s advice has actually changed and improved their lives. Thanks to the show, Kristen penned the Amish romance novel she’d always joked about writing, traveled back to her past lives, and she broached some difficult conversations with her husband about their marriage. Jolenta finally memorized her husband’s phone number, began tracking her finances, and fell in love with cutting clutter.
In How to Be Fine, Jolenta and Kristen synthesize the lessons and insights they’ve learned and share their experiences with everyone. How to Be Fine is a thoughtful look at the books and practices that have worked, real talk on those that didn’t, and a list of philosophies they want to see explored in-depth. The topics they cover include:
    Getting off your device
    Engaging in positive self-talk
    Downsizing
    Admitting you're a liar
    Meditation
    Going outside
Getting in touch with your emotions
    Seeing a therapist
Part memoir, part prescriptive handbook, this honest, funny, and heartfelt guide is like a warm soul-baring conversation with your closest and smartest friends.
Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.

    Gravity's Hidden Partner -...

Dark matter is one of the most perplexing and elusive concepts in modern astrophysics. It was first proposed in the early 20th century when astronomers and physicists observed that galaxies and galaxy clusters seemed to be moving in ways that couldn't be explained by the visible matter alone. Despite the fact that dark matter cannot be directly seen or measured through conventional means, its existence has been inferred through its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe.
The concept of dark matter emerged after astronomer Fritz Zwicky made an important observation in the 1930s. He noticed that galaxy clusters were moving much faster than they should have been based on the amount of visible matter present in them. In other words, there seemed to be an invisible force or substance that was exerting additional gravitational pull on these galaxies. However, it wasn't until the 1970s when Vera Rubin made similar findings in her studies of galactic rotation curves that the theory of dark matter gained significant traction.
Rubin's work revealed that the outer edges of galaxies were rotating faster than expected, based on the amount of visible matter present in them. If only the visible stars, gas, and dust were taken into account, the outer regions should have been moving slower, but they weren't. This discrepancy suggested that there was more mass in these galaxies than what could be seen. This unseen mass was later attributed to dark matter, a substance that doesn't emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it undetectable by conventional instruments.
