Hello (And Goodbye) To All That...

    Jonathan Liebson

Raised in suburban Chicago, Jonathan Liebson grew up hearing fabled stories about his father's childhood in New York. The Manhattan and Queens of his father's past, and the Lower East Side of his immigrant grandfather, always shimmered in the background—until one day Jonathan finally moved there himself. This was right on the cusp of the twenty-first century: the dawn of a new millennium. The city raced headlong into an era of cellphones, the internet, and many other unpredictable changes. Over time, New York would be wracked by 9/11, a Great Recession, a great hurricane, and a great pandemic—plus much more. Hello (and Goodbye) to All That is a memoir that recounts the indelible ties Jonathan would forge in his father's city, and his up-close view of profound historical episodes. The memoir plays off Joan Didion's famous essay "Goodbye to All That," where she describes the exciting yet fleeting experience of living in New York. In contrast, Jonathan's memoir provides a narrative about the city's permanence: it tells an intergenerational story of father and son that reveals a mutual connection to a constantly changing, often-troubled, yet still-dynamic city—and to the larger American history it comprises.

In 1999, the American Film Institute released its list of the 50 greatest Hollywood stars of the 20th century, and selecting the best actresses out of the bunch was certainly a tall task. The competition was so stacked that women like Ginger Rogers, Grace Kelly and Rita Hayworth were not even among the Top 10. So who were the Top 5 women selected by the AFI?
Aside from being one of the most recognized and acclaimed actresses in history, Katharine Hepburn’s career is also of great importance because she forced Americans to reevaluate their expectations for female behavior, both in films themselves and off the movie set as well.
Bette Davis presided over Hollywood at a time in which the film industry was at its most influential. Every actress from Katharine Hepburn to Ingrid Bergman and Ginger Rodgers, themselves now considered among Hollywood’s greatest icons, lived in the shadow of Bette Davis.
For someone whose career ended over 30 years ago, Audrey Hepburn continues to retain her popularity and exert a strong influence over how people view beauty and sophistication. She remains an American icon, despite the fact that she did not even move to the United States until 1953 (at the age of 24) and spent the majority of her life living in Europe.
At times during her career, Bergman was the darling of Hollywood, but at other times she was literally a pariah. It is all too common to remember Bergman for her performance in Casablanca, forgetting the fact that she was effectively exiled from Hollywood for several years during her romance with Roberto Rossellini.
Of all the great movie stars, there may be none more enigmatic than Greta Garbo, who remains internationally famous despite the fact her life and career raise more questions than answers. How did a Swedish actress with very little film acting experience in her native land arrive in the United States and achieve instant stardom?

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want, He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads Me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul.He guides in paths of righteousness for his name sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, They comfort me; You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

A middle aged author declining in popularity. An up and coming literary agent with an eye for genius. A partnership that would forge a prodigious legacy in American literature.
Henry James was a middle-aged author who had established himself on a transatlantic scale when he employed James Brand Pinker as his literary agent in 1898. The changing preferences of a growing audience of readers along with James’s self-defeating practice of shifting from publisher to publisher, rather than adhering to the trade courtesy of remaining loyal to one house, were making the author’s efforts to keep his work in print increasingly difficult; bringing Pinker, who managed the literary business of over 100 authors including Stephen Crane, H.G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, and Jack London, into the picture made it possible for James to maintain a presence before the reading public to an extent that would have been impossible without the agent’s assistance.
Pinker’s involvement was vital to the continuance of James’s career, as his later works and the New York Edition proved difficult material to place. The agent’s role as the mediator of conflict between the commercial writer and literary artist, positions that James had difficulty reconciling, had considerable influence on the shape of James’s later career and thus the way in which the author is remembered; James’s legacy is therefore clearly tied to Pinker’s efforts.
Using correspondence between Pinker, James, and the primary publishers of James’s material from 1898 until Pinker’s death in 1922, along with secondary works addressing the agent’s endeavors during this period, this volume demonstrates the link between Pinker’s work and James’s continued presence in print, both during the author’s lifetime and after his death.

Every family has a story. Like my father Robert Lawrence Lamp Sr. use to say, "we are no better, but different." My sisters and I, our children and grandchildren have all been impacted by the legacy of love our parents gave us. How does a family insure that future generations understand and adopt core values that will make their lives better and different. Robert Lawrence Lamp Jr., a musician and songwriter, chronicles a midwest family living and learning life's lessons, sometimes the hard way. Whether you're a family member, friend or someone wanting to pass on values to your own family, "No Better But Different" will prove an enjoyable musical journey and inside look at what matters most.
‘’A delightful and relatable family story including happy moments and challenges. Rob Lamp’s struggles with infertility, survival from cancer and a successful career navigation after a mid-life crisis are inspirational. Many life lessons for any individual or family.” — Lily Bengfort, Guided Autobiography Instructor
“Rob paints a clear and detailed picture of his life, the forces that shaped it, and the joys and travails that enriched it. While it is a story well-told, with rich language and original music to introduce readers to the many characters, Marsha and I can attest to its accuracy. Like the many tiles that create a strong and dramatic mosaic, Rob’s autobiography enhances the rich texture of our larger Lamp family story.” — Marsha Lamp Cochran and Jan Lamp Gehler, Rob Lamp’s Sisters
