Summary

What Is Computer Audition

The branch of study known as computer audition (CA), often known as machine listening, focuses on the development of algorithms and systems for the interpretation of audio by machines. Computer audition is an attempt to bring together different fields that, in the past, worked with particular issues or had a specific application in mind. This is done since the concept of what it means for a machine to "hear" is extremely wide and somewhat hazy. In an interview with Technology Review, the engineer Paris Smaragdis discusses these systems, which he describes as "software that uses sound to locate people moving through rooms, monitor machinery for impending breakdowns, or activate traffic cameras to record accidents."

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The Geometry of Change is a field guide to building models that are both honest about complexity and useful in practice. It connects three pillars—how systems work (mechanisms), how we encode them (models), and how we learn from the world (measurement)—into a coherent workflow for decision-making. Beginning with why we model at all, it explores growth patterns and limits, stochasticity and structure, interactions and spread, spatial and metapopulation thinking, and the challenges of fitting parameters from real data. It then turns to interpreting signals—trends, cycles, and regimes—showing how to separate what persists from what repeats and what truly changes the rules. Throughout, it emphasizes calibration, uncertainty, fairness, and governance, translating technical craft into operational playbooks and ethics-aware practices. The result is a practical, human-centered approach to turning data into insight, and insight into action, across ecological, urban, digital, and organizational systems.

From one of the finest naturalists and writers of our time, a fascinating investigation of Nature’s inspiring death-to-life cycle.

How does the animal world deal with death? And what ecological and spiritual lessons can we learn from examining this? Bernd Heinrich has long been fascinated by these questions, and when a good friend with a terminal illness asked if he might have his “green burial” at Heinrich’s hunting camp in Maine, it inspired the acclaimed biologist and author to investigate. Life Everlasting is the fruit of those investigations, illuminating what happens to animals great and small after death.

From beetles to bald eagles, ravens to wolves, Heinrich reveals the fascinating and mostly hidden post-death world that occurs around us constantly, while examining the ancient and important role we too play as scavengers, connecting death to life.

“Bernd Heinrich is one of the finest naturalists of our time. Life Everlasting shines with the authenticity and originality that are unique to a life devoted to natural history in the field.”—Edward O. Wilson, author of The Future of Life and The Social Conquest of Earth

""Despite focusing on death and decay, Life Everlasting is far from morbid; instead, it is life-affirming . . . convincing the reader that physical demise is not an end to life, but an opportunity for renewal.""—Nature

“A worldwide tour of the role of death in nature that is consistently fascinating and fun to read.”—Seattle Times

Sci-fi authors, Movie-makers and futurists have been dreaming Artificial Intelligence taking over for decades now. They have been defining the new horizon of robotic technology, artificial brain and artificial intelligence for a long time. However, what was their dreams, the researchers and scientists of the twenty-first century have turned it almost into a mere reality. Artificial Intelligence nowadays has surrounded us. Almost all the technical and some of the non-technical fields are improving pretty fast, holding the hands of Artificial Intelligence. From the auto parking facility in your car to the sometimes frustrating voice assistance application in your Smartphone. From defining diseases and their medication in the healthcare sector to our education system nowadays, you name it. Almost everything that contains the word *smart* before its name is been operated with Artificial Intelligence.
True is the fact that we are not going to make robots that are self-aware like they were in the Star Wars movies in the next decade (with these capable scientists of this century, it is safe to talk only about the next decade and not more than that). However, we are already using Artificial Intelligence not only in the technological sectors but also in different sectors of society like medicine and healthcare. Even in Education. This might isn’t as mind-blowing as it seems in your Smartphone and you don’t expect the humanoid robots teaching you in your class. At least not in the next decade like we said. However, there are some cases where AI has been involved with our education system.
There are a lot of Projects where the Artificial Brains have been helping both the teachers and the students to get the maximum out in return from our education system.

For people living in Costa Rica or visiting the country for the purpose of researching, observing, and photographing wild birds, this work is a fundamental starting point. It describes relevant data for the conservation, research, and recreational enjoyment of 108 species of birds that have a limited geographic distribution, meaning they can only be observed in this part of the world.

For each of the species covered in the work, a description is included with useful data related to their habitat, behavior, distribution, and conservation status. In addition, more than 180 high-quality photographs are included, which, together with a detailed description of the anatomical aspects of each species, are intended to facilitate their identification. The data included come from field observations for more than a decade, as well as from the most up-to-date scientific literature.

Also included is a section on the main regions and specific sites in Costa Rica recommended for observing endemic birds. Furthermore, the areas of endemism are characterized, ranging from southeastern Honduras to western Panama. The reader also has a registration list to record the species observed and the code of ethics for bird watchers proposed by the Ornithological Association of Costa Rica, so that the human-bird relationship is as harmonious as possible and allows the permanent enjoyment of this activity, which constitutes the main purpose of the work.

What does self-care look like when struggling to make ends meet, living with a disability, or navigating intersectional marginalization? How can you prioritize well-being while divesting from systems built to destroy you? The answer: Hood Wellness, a groundbreaking exploration that challenges the oppressive systems deeply rooted in health and wellness industries in the United States.
In a world where self-care is critical to survival, Gordon offers a revolutionary perspective that celebrates individuals' unique privileges, challenges, and desires. By defying the norms of multi-billion-dollar industries, Hood Wellness illuminates the possibilities...
Joshua Dixon's essay, "A Beauty Worth Admiring," is a deeply personal narrative recounting his journey of survival, resilience, and self-discovery following a traumatic pit bull attack that left him with severe injuries at the age of eight. He describes the intense physical and emotional pain he endured during his recovery, including multiple surgeries and the challenges of navigating a world that often treated him with cruelty due to his appearance.
Despite these hardships, Joshua finds solace and strength in his family, especially his mother, who supported him unwaveringly. He shares how his passion for art and photography became a therapeutic outlet, allowing him to express the pain he couldn’t articulate with words and ultimately helping him reclaim his identity and confidence.
Joshua also reflects on the racism and ableism he encountered throughout his life, particularly during his time in school. He describes how these experiences, along with the ongoing struggle with body dysmorphia and mental health challenges, have shaped his commitment to promoting wellness and kindness through his platform, Admire Wear. The essay highlights his growth from a victim to a survivor who uses his story and art to inspire and uplift others.

The Dawn of Mind - How Matter...

Although consciousness is at the very center of who we are, its exact nature continues to confound modern science. From where does consciousness originate? At our core, are we material bodies or immaterial conscious minds? Many assume that consciousness is a product of our complex brains, a product of evolution—and yet, there is no evolutionary reason that a mechanical function of the brain should allow us to enjoy the beauty of a sunrise or become intoxicated with the smell of rain on dry earth. If consciousness is not the product of sophisticated human brains, might the nonhuman living world be conscious? If so, where does that place us in relation to the rest of life on Earth—and what does this imply about our domination and plundering of the natural world for resources? Dr. James Cooke is no stranger to intricate and existential questions such as these, and he confronts them head-on in his compelling, inventive, revolutionary new book, The Dawn of Mind: How Matter Became Conscious and Alive. Weaving together cutting-edge science and the contemplative insights that arise from mystical experience, as occurs with meditation and the emerging therapeutic paradigm of psychedelic medicine, Cooke radically redraws our understanding of what it truly means to be who we are.
