From prehistory to the present day, the story of Edinburgh is packed with incident and drama. As Scotland's capital since 1437, the city has witnessed many of the key events which have shaped the nation. But Edinburgh has always been much more than just a political centre. During the Enlightenment, it was one the intellectual powerhouses of Europe, and in the twentieth century it became the arts capital of the world with the founding of its many festivals. Finance, religion, education and industry are also important parts of the story.
Alistair Moffat explores these themes and many more, showing how the city has grown, changed and adapted over the centuries. He introduces Edinburgh's famous places and people – including monarchs, murderers, writers and philosophers – as well as the ordinary citizens who have contributed so much to the life of one of the world's best-known and most beautiful cites.

I had heard tales of women with secret knowledge and powers, but I never imagined that there would be one standing right in front of me.
“You’re a Völva?” the word rolled off my tongue strangely...
I only knew faintly what a Völva was. They were said to be strange women with strange powers. Not only could they protect and ward against ill omens, but they could also travel the realms and reach into places untapped by most humans. As such, they were often spoken of in whispers of both reverence and mystery.
“Yes, I am. And an old one at that,” she said, getting up from her chair.
It seemed so casual as if she was just talking about a mindless chore that she was doing. Like it was nothing special that she had just performed some form of magic right in front of me.
For two years, I learned everything I could on runes, protections, herbs, medicines, and anything else that Dagmar deemed necessary. In the few moments I had that were not dedicated to lessons from Dagmar, I would seek out Ivar for his quiet presence. There was just something about being near him that set my mind at ease.
All that consumed my thoughts was avengement and how close Ulrik was. Soon he would taste the bitter sting of defeat.
In the realms of Norse Mythology, a girl sets out to avenge her village only to meet a powerful teacher on her journey into the abyss of forbidden knowledge.

Have you ever wished you were dead? Do you understand that hopelessness? Is it lonely? In severe depression, you know how it feels when nobody else really understands. It's obvious from what "they" do and say that they've never felt what you feel. This book is not for them. If you do know what "they don't understand" means without my even explaining it, then this book is for you. I will say the uncomfortable, quiet parts out loud, even though we're not supposed to say what we really think. I'm just a guy who struggled for 14 years with strange, undiagnosed health problems, followed by 7 years in an emotional hellhole, before I miraculously found a glimmer of meaning in the dark. I can't understand your personal hell. However, if I articulate even a small part of what it means that "they don't understand," I ask you to consider my unique perspective on why your suffering matters. You can find peace to know that you do not suffer¿in vain. Your life can have meaning, and you can hope for relief.
