Sinossi

"Power of Belief" explores the profound impact of belief systems on individuals and societies, examining how faith shapes our behavior and molds cultures. It argues that beliefs are powerful forces driving our perceptions, motivations, and actions, forming the foundation of individual and collective identities. One intriguing fact is how belief systems contribute to group cohesion and identity formation. The book uses psychological research, sociological studies, and historical analyses to support its arguments.

The book progresses by first defining belief systems and exploring their psychological mechanisms, including cognitive biases and social pressures. Later chapters investigate the social impact of shared beliefs and the influence of belief systems on cultural evolution, covering topics from moral values to political institutions. A unique aspect is its emphasis on the interplay between individual psychology and social forces in shaping beliefs. It highlights how beliefs emerge from the complex interaction between individual cognition and social conditioning.

The 2500 year old Tao Te King by the Chinese sage Lao-Tse is a jewel of Eastern wisdom. It is counted among the most profound and most translated books of world literature. In deep, mystical language of incomparable imagery, the Tao Te King speaks of the Tao, the divine origin of all existence, and its spiritual force within us. Its intention is to lead us back to the original oneness with the Tao, and so into harmony with the all-embracing wholeness of existence. In this outstanding new transcription, Zen Master Zensho has wonderfully succeeded in portraying the entire mystical expressive force of this work whilst strictly adhering to the original sense, and thus opening up a completely new, profounder dimension. A timeless book of unique mystical fullness and linguistic beauty.

Until the 1930s, nationalism had always tended to be a phenomenon of the right-wing or the immigrant anarchists and Bolsheviks. Now, however, the emphasis shifted to the middle ground, and ironically, one of the issues driving Argentine nationalism was the outsized British presence in Argentine affairs, stoked recently by the preferential trade agreement. Perhaps most importantly, the seizure by the British in 1833 of the Islas Malvinas (or as the British termed them, the Falkland Islands) remained a sore point.
This wave of cultural nationalism was very different to the more visceral, political nationalism that came before it, and it gathered a considerable following in Buenos Aires among liberal intellectuals and the middle classes. The movement was given further impetus by the outbreak of World War II and the freezing of European markets, along with the British emphasis on the imperial preference as a means of saving foreign currency. Calls began to be heard for industries to be nationalized, for goods no longer imported to be manufactured at home, and for a greater degree of protectionism and self-sufficiency. At the same time, Argentina’s neutrality during the war was punished by the United States, which excluded Argentina from a program of arming several Latin American countries. This struck the Argentine armed forces with a bout of the jitters in case they fell behind in matters of military preparedness.
After the tensions had mounted for over a year, matters played out precisely as Perón’s opponents had feared. By the final months of 1945, his popularity had soared, and it seemed inevitable that he would seize control of the military government if permitted to remain in power.

The insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was not a blip or an aberration. It was the logical outcome of years of a White evangelical subculture's preparation for war. Religion scholar and former insider Bradley Onishi maps the origins of White Christian nationalism and traces its offshoots in Preparing for War.

Combining his own experiences in the youth groups and prayer meetings of the 1990s with an immersive look at the steady blending of White grievance politics with evangelicalism, Onishi crafts an engrossing account of the years-long campaign of White Christian nationalism that led to January 6. How did the rise of what Onishi calls the New Religious Right, between 1960 and 2015, give birth to violent White Christian nationalism during the Trump presidency and beyond? What propelled some of the most conservative religious communities in the country—communities of which Onishi was once a part—to ignite a cold civil war?

Through chapters on White supremacy and segregationist theologies, conspiracy theories, the Christian-school movement, purity culture, and the right-wing media ecosystem, Onishi pulls back the curtain on a subculture that birthed a movement and has taken a dangerous turn.
