Sinossi

Persian Army Formation examines how a relatively small kingdom built an empire spanning from the Indus Valley to the Balkans through its sophisticated military organization. This World History book delves into the Achaemenid military, highlighting its command structure, logistical support, and tactical doctrines. Did you know the Persian army wasn't just about brute force? It was also about efficient resource management, exemplified by the Royal Road, facilitating troop and supply movement.

The book progresses from the historical context of the Achaemenid dynasty to detailed analyses of troop composition, including the elite Immortals and varied regional contingents. It further explores the logistical networks sustaining the army, demonstrating how infrastructure projects played a pivotal role. The Persian army's success stemmed from its sophisticated organization, efficient logistics, and adaptable command system, not mere numerical superiority. This meticulous approach sets this History Military book apart.

This Military History book integrates military history with socio-economic and political analysis, offering a comprehensive understanding of the Achaemenid military machine. By examining how the tribute system and resource management contributed to military strength, the book provides a holistic view suitable for both scholars and enthusiasts.

The fall of the Han Dynasty marked the end of one of China’s longest and most influential imperial reigns, setting the stage for the chaotic period of the Three Kingdoms. While the dynasty had enjoyed centuries of stability and prosperity, internal corruption, weak leadership, and external rebellions steadily eroded its power. By the late second century AD, the once-mighty Han court was little more than a battleground for rival factions, warlords, and opportunists seeking to seize control.
One of the first major signs of decline was the increasing corruption within the imperial court. Eunuchs, who had gained substantial influence over the young emperors, manipulated state affairs for personal gain. As these power struggles intensified, competent officials and generals were sidelined or purged, leaving the empire vulnerable to both internal unrest and external threats. The weakening of central authority allowed regional governors and warlords to act with growing independence, further fragmenting the empire.
Amidst this political turmoil, a major peasant uprising erupted in 184 AD—the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Led by Zhang Jue, a Taoist healer who promised salvation through divine intervention, the rebellion quickly spread across northern and central China, drawing hundreds of thousands of followers. Although the Han government eventually crushed the revolt, the effort severely drained the empire’s resources and exposed its inability to maintain control. The rebellion’s suppression also elevated the status of military commanders, many of whom would later become the powerful warlords who divided the empire.

Witches, Midwives, and Nurses examines how women-led healing was delegitimized to make way for patriarchy, capitalism, and the emerging medical industry.

As we watch another agonizing attempt to shift the future of healthcare in the United States, we are reminded of the longevity of this crisis, and how firmly entrenched we are in a system that doesn't work.

First published by the Feminist Press in 1973, Witches, Midwives, and Nurses is an essential book about the corruption of the medical establishment and its historic roots in witch hunters. In this new and updated edition, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English delve into the current fascination with and controversies about witches, exposing our fears and fantasies. They build on their classic exposé on the demonization of women healers and the political and economic monopolization of medicine. This quick history brings us up-to-date, exploring today's changing attitudes toward childbirth, alternative medicine, and modern-day witches.
