The Rule of Law - A Very Short...

Politicians, judges, and citizens commonly use the phrase "rule of law" to describe some good that flows from a legal system. But what precisely is that good? Even in Aristotle's time, there was no agreement on either its nature, and on whether it counted as an unqualified good. Even now, a core rule-of-law aspiration is that law can constrain how power is flexed. But how or when? Disagreement persists as to whether the rule of law is a matter of how law is used or why it is deployed. In consequence, the World Bank, the leaders of Singapore's one-party state, and the Communist Party in China can all offer their own spins on the concept.

By charting these disagreements and showing the overlap and the conflicts between different understandings of the concept, Aziz Z. Huq shows how the rule of law can still be used as an important tool for framing and evaluating the goals and functions of a legal system. He traces the idea's historical origins from ancient Greece to the constitutional theorist Albert Venn Dicey to the economist and political philosopher Friedrich Hayek. And he explores how that value is coming under pressure from terrorist threats, macroeconomic crisis, pandemics, autocratic populism, and climate change.

In "Good Inside" by Becky Kennedy, parents are offered a transformative perspective and practical tools to shift from feelings of frustration and self-blame to empowerment and confident leadership in parenting. Dr. Becky challenges the traditional model of child-rearing, which relies on rewards, punishments, and behavior modification techniques that often fail to address children's complex emotional needs and long-term skill development. Instead, she introduces a profound and simple truth: both parents and children have inherent goodness within them. There are no "bad kids" or "bad parents"; there are only good kids struggling and good parents striving to fulfill their roles effectively.
Dr. Becky advocates for a shift in focus from discipline to connection, emphasizing the importance of secure attachment in helping children navigate challenging times. "Good Inside" serves as both a manifesto and a practical guide, promoting self-development for parents alongside child development. It provides strategies for shifting perspectives and offers troubleshooting advice for specific parenting scenarios, such as sibling rivalry, separation anxiety, tantrums, and more. This book empowers a generation of parents to raise their children in a way that fosters resilience, confidence, and self-regulation, all while recognizing and nurturing the innate goodness in themselves and their kids.

World War I witnessed the First Battle of the Atlantic, when the Kaiserreich unleashed its U-boats against England. During the war, the German submarines sent much of the British merchant marine to the bottom. Indeed, German reliance on U-boats in both World War I and World War II stemmed largely from their nation's geography. The Germans eventually recognized the superiority of the Royal Navy and its capacity to blockade Germany's short coastline in the event of war. While the British could easily interdict surface ships, submarines slipped from their Kiel or Hamburg anchorages unseen, able to prey upon England's merchant shipping.
The sleek hunter-killers lurking beneath the waves, using periscopes to close in unnoticed on their prey, added a new, nerve-wracking element to naval warfare. The mere threat of submarine attack immediately altered naval tactics and strategies employed by both the Western Allies and the Central Powers, shifting them towards a more cautious approach, especially at the war’s start when the submarine threat remained untested.
One critical innovation in World War II's Atlantic U-boat operations consisted of wolf-pack tactics, in which Admiral Karl Dönitz put great faith: “The greater the number of U-boats that could be brought simultaneously into the attack, the more favourable would become the opportunities offered to each individual attacker. […] it was obvious that, on strategic and general tactical grounds, attacks on convoys must be carried out by a number of U-boats acting in unison.” (Dönitz, 1990, 4).
However, even the wolf-pack proved insufficient to defeat the Atlantic convoys and stop Allied commerce – the precise opposite of the Pacific theater, where America's excellent submarine forces annihilated much of Japan's merchant marine and inflicted severe damage on the Imperial Japanese Navy.
