Synopsis

How does a man find his extraordinary? The story follows Gerald (Ged) Baker, his jaw-droppingly critical wife, Marge and their plain-speaking grandchildren. Finding himself with unexpected time on his hands after a nasty encounter with a heavy picnic cool bag, Ged is unable to play with the grandchildren and rediscovers a long-forgotten artistic talent, inspired by his grandchildren's bizarre requests and chance encounters with fascinating characters. The clandestine actions of his daughter-in-law create an opportunity for Ged.
Marge is super-judgmental and conceited. She probably has her reasons, but as Marge's behaviour worsens, there are clues that something isn't right.
A down-on-his-luck publishing agent in London, Mike's career is at a crisis point. He spends a week in Porthleven, where his story collides with Ged's as he spots a sketch on a cafe wall and hopes he has found an illustrator for one of his main clients. Fate has more in store for Ged and Mike as their lives continue to intertwine. Ged has a second life in Cornwall, but where will it take him? Mike has a life decision to make, too.
The Second Life of Ged Baker is the first in a series of adult fiction stories exploring the life stories of the residents of a beautiful, exclusive and expensive nursing and residential home on the south coast of Cornwall.

No.1 bestselling author Gill Sims is back with her eagerly awaited sixth Why Mummy novel.
When family life gives you lemons, trade them for grapes!
Mummy Ellen has a Vision. She will cherish every moment this holiday with her Moppets Peter and Jane, alongside her ride-or-die best pal, Hannah. There will be wicker baskets! Vintage bicycles! Pink sunshine wine! And not an electronic babysitter in sight.
But as she strives for her picture-perfect “Ultimate Family Summer” in her not-quite-a-chateau, reality crashes the party. With small feral hell-beasts to keep alive on the daily, and Hannah suddenly MIA, wine o’clock gets earlier by the day.
Can Ellen keep The Vision alive without resorting to nightly beige ‘freezer tapas’ (aka guilt-flavoured chicken nuggets)? Or will she reach the end of her Gentle Parenting book – and her tether – as her dream holiday descends into a nightmare?
Join Ellen on her uproarious quest to salvage one of the #18PreciousSummers, or simply find her Grape Escape.
Gill Sims, known for her autofiction and biographical stories, once again delivers a masterpiece. Why Mummy Drinks on Holiday is a testament to her storytelling prowess, weaving themes of marriage, divorce, and friendship into a humorous and relatable narrative.
For fans of Sophie Kinsella (What Does it Feel Like?), Freya Kennedy (The Hopes and Dreams of Libby Quinn), Kristen Bailey (Textbook Romance), Alexandra Potter (More Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up), and Jane Fallon (Getting Rid of Matthew).

Legends and Tales is a collection of short stories and folklore-inspired narratives by Bret Harte, showcasing his talent for blending regional color, humor, and moral insight. Set primarily in the American West and mining towns of California, the tales feature larger-than-life characters—gamblers, outcasts, pioneers, and dreamers—whose lives are shaped by fate, fortune, and the rugged frontier landscape. Drawing on oral traditions and local legends, Harte weaves stories rich in sentiment, irony, and vivid atmosphere. Themes of loyalty, justice, and human resilience echo throughout, capturing the spirit of a bygone era. This lesser-known but compelling collection further cements Harte’s role as a master storyteller and chronicler of the Old West.
