Summary

In this adventurous story, the protagonists must face both physical and personal obstacles. The friendship between the Man of the Woods and the other characters is crucial in overcoming them, but it is also the rope that provides security during the descents into the mine. It is the bond that drives them to not leave anyone behind, so that everyone can change and become better people. Central to the story are values such as friendship, trust, and the desire to improve people’s lives. The characters are fictional but are inspired by real people, and the places where the story unfolds lead the more curious reader to the entrance of a new world where technology comes to the aid of people.

Castle’s first landing on Venus was meant to be a methodical scientific survey — a straightforward assignment for a cautious man who trusted data more than instinct. But when his helicar crashes in the planet’s fog-drenched night, he discovers he’s not alone among the towering fungi and endless wind. Strange, small figures hunt him through the murk, driving him toward something he never expected to find. Each step forward challenges his assumptions about the planet, its inhabitants, and his own role as humanity’s first representative on this untamed world.
First Landing is classic Roger Dee—tight, tense, and filled with the slow build of discovery that defined so much early planetary adventure. Dee uses the alien ecology of Venus not just as a backdrop, but as a force shaping Castle’s every decision. And as the mystery deepens, Castle’s objective survey becomes something far more personal.
Roger Dee (Roger D. Aycock) was an American science-fiction author best known for his thoughtful, character-driven stories that appeared throughout the 1950s and 60s. His work often blended frontier exploration with psychological tension, using alien environments to push ordinary people into extraordinary circumstances. Dee’s fiction appeared in If, Galaxy, Planet Stories, and other beloved magazines of the era. Though never one of the loudest voices of the Golden Age, he became a favorite among readers who appreciated grounded speculation over spectacle. His stories endure today for their clarity, pacing, and subtle emotional depth.

X Marks the Pedwalk by Fritz Leiber - This is how it all began—the terrible civil strife that devastates our world!
The raggedy little old lady with the big shopping bag was in the exact center of the crosswalk when she became aware of the big black car bearing down on her.
Behind the thick bullet-proof glass its seven occupants had a misty look, like men in a diving bell.
She saw there was no longer time to beat the car to either curb. Veering remorselessly, it would catch her in the gutter.
Useless to attempt a feint and double-back, such as any venturesome child executed a dozen times a day. Her reflexes were too slow.
Polite vacuous laughter came from the car's loudspeaker over the engine's mounting roar.
From her fellow pedestrians lining the curbs came a sigh of horror.
The little old lady dipped into her shopping bag and came up with a big blue-black automatic. She held it in both fists, riding the recoils like a rodeo cowboy on a bucking bronco.
Aiming at the base of the windshield, just as a big-game hunter aims at the vulnerable spine of a charging water buffalo over the horny armor of its lowered head, the little old lady squeezed off three shots...
