Sinopse

In "The Private Journal of Judge-Advocate Larpent," F. Seymour Larpent offers an intimate glimpse into the tumultuous world of military justice during the Napoleonic Wars. This meticulously crafted work blends personal reflection with doctrinal insight, revealing the complexities of his role as a judge-advocate. Written in a clear yet evocative prose style, Larpent's journal provides not only an account of military proceedings but also a lens through which the ethical dilemmas and societal norms of early 19th-century Britain are examined. The text is imbued with a sense of urgency and introspection, representing a significant contribution to the historical understanding of military law and its ramifications on personal integrity and the pursuit of justice during a period marked by conflict. F. Seymour Larpent, an officer of the late British Army, possesses a unique authority derived from his firsthand experiences in the legal complexities of military service. His position afforded him unparalleled access to high-profile trials and sensitive proceedings, allowing him to blend personal narrative with critical legal commentary. This background not only provides depth to his observations but also offers readers a rare perspective on the interactions between legal and military hierarchies in an era that shaped modern judicial practices. This book is highly recommended for scholars and enthusiasts of military history, legal studies, and personal memoirs alike. Larpent's insightful observations and vivid recounting of events illuminate the moral ambiguities inherent in war, making this journal not merely a historical account but a timeless exploration of human nature under duress. As such, it serves as both a compelling narrative and a critical historical document.

A “fascinating and informative” reassessment of the underappreciated Confederate general’s achievements and ahead-of-his-time military strategy (Midwest Book Review).   Lieutenant-General James Longstreet, commander of the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, was a brilliant tactician and strategist. Prior to the Civil War there were many technological developments, of which the rifled musket and cannon, rail transport, and the telegraph were just a few. In addition, the North enjoyed a great advantage in manpower and resources. Longstreet adapted to these technological changes and the disparity between the belligerents, making recommendations on how the war should be fought.   Longstreet made a mental leap to adjust to this new type of warfare. Many others didn’t make this leap, including Lee, Jackson, Bragg, Hood, and Jefferson Davis, and Longstreet’s advice went unheeded. In contrast to many southern generals, he advocated for defensive warfare, using entrenchments and trying to maneuver the enemy to assault his position, conserving manpower, resources, and supplies. With the advent of the highly accurate and long-range rifled musket, offensive tactics became questionable and risky. This caused Longstreet to come into conflict with General Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, and with General Bragg at Chickamauga.   Longstreet, a pragmatic and methodical general, was never given full authority over an army in the field. Had his suggestions been utilized there would have been a better outcome for the South. Many historians and biographers have misunderstood Longstreet and his motives, but this work offers a fresh perspective. It takes a new viewpoint of the Civil War and the generals who tailored their designs to pursue the war, analyzes Longstreet’s views of the generals and the tactics and strategy they employed, and examines why Longstreet proposed and urged a new type of warfare.

When the US president, Harry S Truman, declared the Truman Doctrine in March 1947, he could not have known that the resultant Cold War would persist for over forty years until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. In addition to nuclear and conventional military friction between the Eastern and Western blocs, the struggle for dominance involved a remarkable range of activities including the space race, psychological efforts, espionage, even rivalry at sporting functions and technological events. This diversity is reflected in the twenty chapters of Cold War Boys which opens with a vivid description from the author of survival procedures used by English Electric Lightning pilots in the event of nuclear war. From there on, various contributors share their original experiences on a range of fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft across the world, including tales from RAF Germany, the Falklands, and the Far East. Each story demonstrates some of the intriguing circumstances faced by aircrew and ground crew whose tenacity and professionalism had to cope with miscellaneous situations of danger, excitement, risk, pathos, and humor. This book serves as a reminder of what air forces faced during the Cold War years as the ever-present threat of nuclear war persisted. A must for all aviation fans.
