Summary

The 'Lustra of Ezra Pound' presents an intriguing anthology that bridges the thematic and stylistic divides between Eastern and Western literary traditions. At its core, the collection explores notions of identity, fragmentation, and the quest for cultural synthesis through a tapestry of poetic forms ranging from classical Chinese poetry to modernist free verse. The anthology stands as a testament to the complexity and diversity of early 20th-century poetics, with Pound's translations of Bai Li's work highlighting the blend and contrast of these literary landscapes. This juxtaposition not only enriches the reader's experience but also underscores the anthology's significance in the broader context of cross-cultural literary dialogues. The contributions of Ezra Pound, a pivotal figure in the modernist movement, and Bai Li, an eminent poet of the Tang Dynasty, encapsulate a period marked by robust explorations into the expressive potentials of language and form. The collection aligns with historical and cultural movements that championed literary innovation and intercultural exchange, drawing from Pound's imagist principles and Bai Li's lyrical introspection. Through their collective efforts, the anthology offers a rich mosaic of perspectives that challenge and redefine traditional boundaries of poetic expression. 'Lustra of Ezra Pound' is a compelling invitation to readers seeking to immerse themselves in a confluence of poetic voices that span time and geography. This anthology is not only a scholarly exploration but also a celebration of the enduring power of poetry to foster understanding and connection across diverse cultural landscapes. Readers will find in this collection an invaluable resource for examining the threads that weave together Eastern and Western literary traditions, and an inspiration for future dialogues in the evolving tapestry of global literature.

“A characteristic of autism can be a difficulty using speech to express thoughts, feelings, and experiences. However, there is often an eloquence in self-expression using the arts, including poetry. Clare’s sensitive and engaging poems provide an insight into her mind and her autism.”
Professor Tony Attwood, author of The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome.
What if you were given a life-altering diagnosis at 57? One that meant you aren’t who you thought you were? But one that explained everything?
These poems vibrate with intensity and curiosity about life, and because she came to this knowledge so late in life, many of Clare Smith’s poems focus not so much on what it means to be autistic, but on what it means to be human.
Throughout her life, as she struggled to fit into a world that to her was utterly strange, she poured her hopes, her joys and at times her despair into words.
She trained as a journalist, taught to cut out all emotion from her reporting, but her private writing is different – she created poetry that spoke to her deepest needs. There, exposed in her writing, is her yearning to belong, her astonishment at the physical world, her knowledge – decades before the doctors confirmed it – that she is different.
She’s spent a lifetime trying to make sense of her life – a journey that many of us, whether autistic or neurotypical, are on, and one in which we all face the same questions.

Nothing slips by Brecken Hancock’s deft ear as she seductively plumbs the depths of the evolution of bathing, doppelgängers, the Kraken and the minutiae of family with all its tragic misgivings. The poems in Broom Broom pervert the rational, safe parts of the world to extoll and absorb the sweep of human history.
