Sinossi

Urban Planning explores the historical roots of modern urban design by examining the architectural principles and urban infrastructure of ancient cities. It reveals how ancient civilizations tackled issues like population density and resource management, challenges still pertinent today. The book uniquely highlights the enduring influence of ancient planning on contemporary urban landscapes. For instance, the grid street layouts, found in many modern cities, were first implemented in ancient Mesopotamia. The book progresses from introducing core urban planning concepts, through case studies of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, to analyzing specific aspects of ancient urban design. Chapters delve into street layouts, examining grid systems and their impact on traffic flow, and infrastructure, investigating ancient water management. By drawing parallels between ancient practices and modern challenges, the book provides valuable insights for creating sustainable and livable cities. It demonstrates that many contemporary urban innovations have their origins in ancient solutions, adapted over time.

Welcome to Guitar for Beginners. This book explains in a comprehensive yet simple way, the fundamentals of how to play the guitar. With over 180 photographic examples, illustrations and purpose made diagrams, the book also includes 42 downloadable mp3 tracks.
Subjects a beginner is better off knowing now, rather than later, are covered, such as technique for left and right hand, using a plectrum, alternate picking, scale and chord construction, fretboard layout and how to navigate around it, chord changes, strumming, basic theory and plenty more.
Melodies - Musical pieces for you to play are used to make the learning process practical and enjoyable. In various styles like Pop, Blues, Jazz, Country and Rock, each piece has a demonstration track and a backing track for you to play over. The standard and commonly used system for reading music for the guitar, known as tablature, is clearly explained and used throughout. To get you started and straight into playing music, numbers have been added underneath guitar tablature to assist you with understanding the rhythm.
Playing Chords - Changing between chords and strumming are approached separately at first, so you can develop coordination in each hand independently. They are then brought together, starting with easy exercises, getting gradually more advanced until there is a rhythm guitar musical piece to play.
Music Theory - The major scale, minor scale, pentatonic scales and basic chord construction are explained in terms of the fretboard and are re-inforced by being used in musical pieces in various styles, putting the theory into context.
ReadingRhythm - Musical notation almost always features with guitar tablature, so a chapter is dedicated to reading rhythm from notation. This will give you a fuller understanding of how it works alongside tablature, which on its own does not indicate rhythm.
Further Techniques - Further techniqes are explored including power chords, movable barre chords, palm muting, basic lead guitar techniques and improvising. All with musical pieces.
What Else? - Each chapter ends with a set of questions to revise your knowledge. All answers are at the back of the book, along with advice on how to practice guitar and a handy chart for all major scales and their note names.

    Why Sinéad O'Connor Matters

In 1990, Sinéad O’Connor’s video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” turned her into a superstar. Two years later, an appearance on Saturday Night Live turned her into a scandal. For many people—including, for years, the author—what they knew of O’Connor stopped there. Allyson McCabe believes it’s time to reassess our old judgments about Sinéad O’Connor and to expose the machinery that built her up and knocked her down.

Addressing triumph and struggle, sound and story, Why Sinéad O’Connor Matters argues that its subject has been repeatedly manipulated and misunderstood by a culture that is often hostile to women who speak their minds (in O’Connor’s case, by shaving her head, championing rappers, and tearing up a picture of the pope on live television). McCabe details O’Connor’s childhood abuse, her initial success, and the backlash against her radical politics without shying away from the difficult issues her career raises. She compares O’Connor to Madonna, another superstar who challenged the Catholic Church, and Prince, who wrote her biggest hit and allegedly assaulted her. A journalist herself, McCabe exposes how the media distorts not only how we see O’Connor but how we see ourselves, and she weighs the risks of telling a story that hits close to home.

In an era when popular understanding of mental health has improved and the public eagerly celebrates feminist struggles of the past, it can be easy to forget how O’Connor suffered for being herself. This is the book her admirers and defenders have been waiting for.
